The perfect marriage sits in the waiting: Tubbs & Penny
If you don’t think Tubbs can coach after this recent turnaround, with this collection of players, I’m not sure what can he done for you. There is still no doubting that he and his staff are lacking in the talent acquisition phase of the game though. Insert Penny. Memphis should make an all out pursuit of making Penny it’s lead recruiter. If Bowen has to do this himself, it should be done. Tubby coaching the kind of talent that Penny can bring in would he astronomical and we’d be in the final 4 inside of 3 seasons.

How long does Pennies recruiting last once he is out of the AAU and high school recruiting scene?

It is a good question. Maybe as long as his shoes remain relevant? Maybe not.

I don't believe Penny will ever be irrelevent in the Memphis area basketball scene.

I would say that 90% of your posts demonstrate that you are completely out of touch with reality, but none of them really can hold a candle to this one. This one is special.

Fit wise, it would be the same as Trump dumping Melania and marrying Hilary.

You may be right. But Tubbs has no choice but to try it, that is, if he wants to sign the best Memphis has to offer. The top national players are pretty much a lock for Kentucky, UNC, UCLA, Kansas & Duke now. They are the nba farm teams. However, Memphis perhaps has a different dynamic that could make them the top choice after those schools. But it’s gonna take Penny to get it back on track.

If not Penny, maybe Madlock as an asst? Is Andre Turner ready to make the jump from HS coach to asst or does he even want to?

It all depends on if Penny will accept being second fiddle and is willing to actually do the grinding it takes to be successful on the recruiting trail.

Doubt Penny would be interested in that.

Penny sees his contemporaries like Patrick Ewing at Georgetown and Chris Mullen at St. John going right to the top spot.

And if you were Tubby, why would you want Penny on the bench and have to deal with the whole fan base wanting Penny to have your job?

Ewing was a NBA assistant for a good number of years.

I know. But Penny could say he's coached one of the top AAU teams and a nationally ranked high school team for years, which arguably prepares him better for the Memphis job than Ewing being an NBA assistant prepared him for Georgetown.

Main point is Ewing didn't have to take a college assistant job to get the gig at his alma mater, Mullen didn't either, which I would think will be Penny's position also.

Tubby doesnt care about Memphis legends, its high school coaches, keeping its players in the city, its culture or its tradition. He has basically made that clear through his actions. I barely follow the team now and I can still see that.

Come back dwash, there's room on the bandwagon.

Going for 5th straight this Saturday, and this team plays hard.

I actually thought they played hard the one game I watched against Bama. The talent level is just so poor. Tubby didnt even sign the best player on the team and isnt recruiting at all, so what will happen when he leaves?

Hard to not succeed for long at a school like Memphis. Too many built in advantages.

They seemed to have turned a corner, who knows? Maybe we'll look back at the Brewton shot at Temple as the turning point.
