RE: Laughable college basketball scores, week 10 (January 15-21)
Wichita State drops ten spots in the RPI, SMU moves up twenty-six. Cincinnati, Wichita, and Temple are in the top 50, but Houston, SMU, and UCF are in the top 60. Memphis and UConn round out the top 100, and Tulane is just outside it.
It's good for the AAC's bid chances to have that many schools on "the right side" of the curve. Houston tumbled to Tulane...as long as Tulane doesn't bottom out, it probably won't be a bad loss. Heck, Memphis and UConn won't be frowned upon per se, either.

Glad to see SMU beat Witchita State, SMU was one of TCUs better OOC wins so having them win helps TCU keep at-large resume up.

Right now for the AAC, only ECU and USF would be for games on the road non tier 1/2 games. Even Tulsa at 130 is tier 2 right now for road games. Only losses in that league that would be bad would be home losses vs some of the teams.

Huge win for Saint Mary’s. Losses to Georgia & Wazzou leave me scratching my head, but I agree with whoever said the Gaels and Pistol Pete will be the 2 Cinderella’s come March.

St. Mary's is not a Cinderella at this point by almost any definition.

WKU escaped UAB, and now we have WKU-MTSU on Saturday. It's kind of similar to Zag-SMC. I'll be honest...Wisconsin might not be only tournament streak to end in 2018. If the series doesn't split, Gonzaga's facing one of those years where they have to earn their way in by winning the AQ. Nothing new to them, really, but, still a pain. KenPom loves them, RPI doesn't...not a lot unlike Wichita from last year?
And I think, if they do miss it this year, something big is going to change there. Either the school works something out with the Big East, or Few leaves. This has to be getting old.
As to UGA for SMC...not a bad loss at all. Washington State otoh...

But you’ve stated Saint Mary’s is one human being away from being Mount St Mary’s.

Yes, and when Randy Bennett leaves, they'll likely be back to that. But for now, given how good they've been the last decade or so, they are no Cinderella.

Heck, the same thing will probably happen at Gonzaga once Few is gone.

And at Duke when Coach K leaves, etc. Very, very few programs maintain their level of success over the long haul through coaching changes. (Gonzaga already has, once --
Few replaced Dan Monson, who cashed in after Gonzaga's Elite Eight in 1999 and made a career-killing move to Minnesota.)
Even those that eventually regain their past level (e.g. North Carolina, Arizona) often do so after a dip under the coach who immediately replaces the most successful coach.

Yep, which is why Gonzaga desperately should look to move up.

I wouldn't say that Duke is a guarantee huge dip. Remember they had 4 final 4's in the 20 years before Coach K took over, to include 2 runner up finishes.
I'd say a far more likely dip is Syracuse when Boeheim leaves.

Coach K is training Jeff Capel as a coach in waiting to take the baton running with little or no drop off.

Lots of teams have had plans like that. Sometimes they work, often they don't.
Syracuse's succession plan got tired of waiting, and he's now the head coach at Washington.

It remains to be seen. But he's a Duke guy and was already a head coach, now learning from the master. He won't be going to the Final Four every 3 seasons on average nor being a 1 or even a 2 every single year but he should keep Duke relevant.

it's infinitely more likely that Duke stays relevant than Gonzaga or St Mary's. Just night and day difference- not even in the same realm of conversation at all whatsoever

RE: Laughable college basketball scores, week 10 (January 15-21)
Saint Mary's is a much different situation than Gonzaga. SMC is heavily reliant on their pipeline of Australian players, which probably can't be duplicated after Bennett retires. So, the next SMC head coach will almost be building from scratch, except that recent success there might give him a recruiting edge over most other mid-major programs.

Davidson 83
St. Bonaventure 73
That's one way to thin the at-large pool.
