SoCon Tournament Advice
I know it is super early yet, but like many, feel that both the men and women are going to do well come tournament time. Add that to the fact that tournament weekend is actually free for us this year and we are looking to make a weekend out of it with some friends from out of town. I’ve only done single game sessions in years past and drove down and back just for the games. So looking for some advice so we can start planning our weekend a little.

We will probably save the cost of a hotel and just drive back and forth each day, but for ticket packages, does anyone have opinions on if the VIP all sessions package is worth it, or would it be better to do general admission. If GA, single game or an all tournament pass?

Best things to do between games? We’ve done some of the Asheville standards like the Biltmore and downtown shopping. Anything else that is a must do that weekend?

I can't comment on the VIP packages, but last year they had a package deal not advertised on their website where 2 adult and 2 kids tickets costs $40/session. Normal tickets are $20/session and $10/session for kids. If they offer the same deal this year, that basically lets the kids in free for a family of 4.

For those who are planning on booking a hotel, do it soon. I waited too long last year and a couple weeks before the tournament the entire city was basically booked up. Ended up getting a hotel outside of Asheville but still a pretty close drive and was happy, but I have already booked my Asheville hotel this year.

If the question is what else to do besides restaurants and basketball, I can help with that. There’s a couple of (relatively) new things at Biltmore. One is Antler Hill Village — a lot of shops and restaurants, and there’s a lower-cost hotel there, at least when compared to the Biltmore Inn. I don’t think you need a ticket to go to Antler Hill Village. The other thing is they’ve got a Titanic exhibit, with all these costumes from the movie Titanic in the main house, I think until May.

My wife likes the mall; she says the Belk and Dillards are higher-end than we have here. She says the same thing about the TJMaxx across the street. But what really floats her boat is the Asheville Outlets, and the Vineyard Vines and Coach outlets there. The Mall is on one end of Asheville and the Outlets on the other. Happy wife, happy life. So we don’t shop much downtown anymore.

There are a bunch of shops at Biltmore Village, across from the entrance to Biltmore. Downtown Hendersonville is also worth a visit; it’s about a 20 minute drive. Several good restaurants there, and a lot of antique and specialty shops on the main drag thru downtown.

Also FYI: The past two years the team has stayed at the Crown Plaza. I suspect that will be the case this year as well but you might want to confirm that. The women's tournament starts a day or two earlier, and it is looking like our women's team may hang around awhile this year too.

We go to the Grail Moviehouse and Fine Arts Theatre downtown often because they show intelligent movies unlike theaters in the Tri.

If you've never been to Papas and Beer (there's one on Tunnel Road), it's my favorite Mexican restaurant anywhere. My favorite restaurant anywhere is Rocky's Hot Chicken (two locations) which does its own version of Nashville hot. The sides there are top notch. We also love Farm Burger; try the chicken burger for something really cool.

The Dillards outlet store has legit bargains.

The Farmers Market near the 26/40 split is a fun visit.

The intelligent movies that you seek in Tri are probably at the Abingdon CineMalls Arts Array series.

Papas and Beer was a bust in JC. Hope it's better in Asheville.

The Beir Garden has been the unofficial pregame gathering spot. Buc fans generally take over entire restaurant and bar. Great beer selection, lots of TV's for sports watching and food is good. Easy two block walk from arena.

In the past Alumni Association passes out shakers, buttons, etc plus pep band makes appearance.

Have also used the Mellow Mushroom, fun place but but limited space.

Yes, the Crowne Plaza is the Bucs official hotel and the team will be staying there. Best way to book it is on the SoCon web site.

Ended up getting a hotel outside of Asheville but still a pretty close drive and was happy, but I have already booked my Asheville hotel this year.

Also, we enjoy going to eat at "Apollo Flame" on Hendersonville Rd (best Greek salad anywhere). "Stoney Knob" in Weaverville (best to call ahead) is excellent and the food at "Sierra Nevada Brewing Co" near the airport is very good.

Ugh. I wish they did the Renaissance.

UNCG likes to claim the beir garden as theirs.. i remember some heated exchanges last year on the forum and in person

I believe the Beir Garden is UNCG’s offical spot. Is Barley’s anyone’s official spot? I love that place.

I don't think so, but it needs to be. One of the best pizza places I've ever scarfed a slice. Distance from arena probably detracts from people using it as an 'official' site, but it will be on my list of stops while there. 04-rock
