RE: WBB vs NIU
This team has performed very well in the last couple minutes of close games. Maine, Akron, and NIU were all games where we trailed with two minutes or less to go. Despite a lot of ugliness, we remain undefeated at home.

RE: WBB vs NIU
This was far from a perfect game for the Rockets but they did enough to win it with a little bit of luck thrown in at the very end when NIU had to have a three, yet the Rockets did not adequately defend the perimeter and NIU got a wide open look for the three which fortunately was a fraction off the mark. This would have been a devastating loss on the home court to a injury depleted NIU squad so it was a particularly special win simply for not being a loss (if that makes any sense).

Just a word of praise for M. Boyd. Aside from running the game at the point and creating her own opening for her reliable 15-20 jumper, her rebounding never ceases to amaze. At something like 5' 7" she is a terror on the boards. Whereas most players try to box out and wait for the rebound to come to them, she instantaneously recognizes the trajectory of the ball and instinctively speeds toward the correct point of intercept and then vertically elevates at just the right time and place to snatch ball out the air in mid flight. Its like watching a sophisticated anti-missile system in action and watching her rebound alone is worth the price of admission.

RE: WBB vs NIU
Is there a worse rule in college basketball than the one punishing a team for good free throw shooting and clock management near the end of the game by allowing the opposition to call a TO and inbound at half court instead of their opponents end line? Horrible rule. NIU should have to take the ball length of court on 1.5 seconds to get a shot.

Love it. Boyd extended Toledo’s two point lead by one after she “hit the back end of a one and one”. Apart from the fact that there are no one and ones in women’s ball, it would be impossible to just hit the back end of one.

RE: WBB vs NIU
Was an up and down game, but some clutch play at the end sealed the win, and any win in league play is a good win. If they can just start making some of those clutch plays all game long.

Boyd was so impressive. She's now averaging over 12 boards per game in MAC play. Wow. And making those pull up jumpers consistently like that does open up some other things on the offense. St. Fort had another really solid game I thought. Very solid on D, and had come more big boards. She's on the floor at the end purely because she's a defensive stopper. Rokkanen is still struggling on the defensive end some, but she's improving. I'm betting that is impacting her shooting - concentrating so much on playing D, that the shooting suffers. She's not the 1st UT player to have that issue under Cullop.

Three point shooting still a concern. Had numerous wide open looks but didn't hit many. If those would have fallen even in a reasonable percentage, UT would have won by 15.

McIntyre is still playing too many minutes. Other teams are taking advantage of her tiredness by having their bigs run the floor and expose that. The coaches haven't helped that - near the end of the game with UT in the lead and shooting FTs, they had Kaayla and St. Fort in the rebounding slots, and NIU took the ball back quickly and beat both of them down court for an easy 2. IMO would have been much better to send both of them back on D, and let Boyd be in the rebounding slot there (unless she is shooting the throws).

Rockets have improved a lot since the 1st OU game, but haven't played the better teams yet, so it remains to be seen if they can continue to improve and put it all together against a CMU, UB or BSU.

Boyd is relentless. If we could shoot... but we can’t. As far as the here pointers go, NIU could say the same- they had some nice looks, couldn’t hit, although we were closing pretty well at times. A win is a win.

There has been some modest improvement or is that a function that they are playing the weaker teams? For me the team limiting weaknesses persist. Ball security remains a major issue. 23 turnovers against OU and 17 against NI this week. And there is this crazy tendency for players to drive into the teeth of the defense with no idea what they will do with the ball when they get there. Rebounding, which has been a big problem, was much improved against OU and NI. But 3PT shooting continues to be inept. 4 for 20 against NI and most of those from B-H. The rest of the team was 1 for 11. Cunningham, who scored 27 and 19 in games earlier this year is completely lost on the floor. And the team is increasingly dependent upon three players to provide almost all of the scoring. Will be revealing to see how they do against Ball State. Hope they have improved, will need it against Ball State and at Buffalo.

Other than the top three scorers, the other seven players who saw the court made a total of 6 baskets.

RE: WBB vs NIU
We just don't have enough offensive options right now, especially when it comes to outside shooting. Rokkanen, Cunningham, and Santucci have all been ineffective. Of the three, I still prefer to see Santucci on the court despite her tendency to make bone-headed plays now and then. I think that the turnovers and poor shooting are part of the same problem. Because we generally have no more than two shooters on the court, we have to drive and dish or force passes inside to try to create offense. As things stand now, we will be a hard-nosed, competitive team that finishes around 10-8 and loses in the first round at Cleveland. If one or two of the players mentioned above catch fire, then we once again become a team capable of winning the conference tournament.

hwut, your comments are insightful, and you obviously know a lot about the game. I'm puzzled, though, by the fact that you support every decision that Cullop makes, and you never second-guess. Of course Cullop knows more about basketball than we do, especially about her own team, but I've never known a fan who didn't sometimes think the coach made a mistake. Is this a matter of, "If I don't have something nice to say, I won't say anything at all," or do you really think Cullop is infallible?

The schedule going forward is daunting. 6 of the final 13 games are against Central Michigan, Ball State and Buffalo. Rockets will be underdogs in all of these matchups. So with two losses in the league already an MAC record around 500 looks inevitable.

Thank you for the nice comment. Like everyone else, I have questions about why certain decisions are made. No coach of any sport is or was infallible, not even the greatest coach ever John Wooden. I choose to keep my negative comments to myself. I believe in PMA, positive mental attitude. I am sure that came from playing and coaching. I have never known a coach to deliberately make a bad decision, some turn out bad. When they do, the coach will second guess him or herself more the we do. You are so right about the coach knowing her players, their strengths and weaknesses. It is amazing to see the depth of her and her staffs knowledge of the opposing team. The preparation at practice before a game is fun to watch. I also appreciate the comments you post on here. You are a very positive person too.

I was wondering the same thing. Scratching my head why they didn't have to go the length of the court. Doesn't make sense.

This rule, borrowed from the NBA, doesn't bother me. The women generally aren't strong enough to throw length-of-the-court passes or heave up half-court shots, so it's not feasible to score in a few seconds from the opposite end of the court. This rule makes for more exciting finishes.

Exactly my point. And I have nderstand it makes for exciting finishes but if my team is behind, runs fifteen seconds off the clock and then executes perfectly and scores the go ahead bucket with two seconds left they are penalized by allowing the opponent to win on a lucky heave from a place where they couldn’t in-bound at any other point in the game. I hate it in the NBA, too.
