RE: Cincinnati Bearcats vs. South Florida Bulls Game Thread
What you, I and everyone learned...
Quote:Cincinnati Bearcats: What we learned from 23-point romp over South Florida

It was not as easy as the score indicates, but the University of Cincinnati's 78-55 basketball win at South Florida on Saturday night again showed the resiliency of a veteran team.
The No. 14-ranked Bearcats (15-2, 4-0 American Athletic Conference) withstood a quick start by prohibitive underdog USF (7-11, 0-5 AAC) to win comfortably. UC trailed 19-9 and 21-11 in the first half, rallied for a 35-33 lead by halftime, then controlled the game thereafter.
UC's night was capped by a postgame visit from former Louisville coach Rick Pitino, who had Bearcats coach Mick Cronin on his U of L staff in the early 2000s. Cronin declined to comment on what Pitino said, but UC insiders said Pitino gave a riveting speech in the Bearcats' locker room and encouraged the team going forward.
Here's a glance back at the USF game, some things we learned, and a look ahead as UC concludes a two-game Florida road trip this week:
COOLER HEADS PREVAIL: UC has shown poise and maturity in rallying to win its last two road games. Before Saturday's win at USF, the Bearcats overcame an eight-point second-half deficit to beat Temple 55-53 on Jan. 7.
In both cases, neither Cronin nor his players lost their heads. A younger Cronin might have blown his top but, as in the Temple game, he mostly watched calmly as UC continued to play its trademark defense and waited for the offense to come around.
"We have guys that know how to win," Cronin said. "The answer isn't to play hero ball, it's to play team ball. Team ball brings you back. Team ball equals a higher shooting percentage, not hero ball. Not fouling, and keeping a team off the line that's a good free throw shooting team.
"Now that's it over, I'm glad it went that way. It happens every week in college basketball. People say, well, how did this team lose to that team? How do these things happen? Well, the other team practices. When a shot goes up, it might go in. I've got to continue to make sure that our guys understand that these games aren't over. You have to win them."
CASHING IN: Entering the game, UC ranked only 270th nationally with a 67.7 percent conversion rate at the foul line. Saturday, UC nailed 27 of 31 attempts for a sharp 87.1 percent. That kind of marksmanship might not happen again soon, but UC needs to push above 70 percent as the season continues.
Against USF, Bearcats starters were 20 for 20 at the stripe as Kyle Washington went 8 for 8 and Gary Clark, Jacob Evans III and Justin Jenifer all were 4 for 4. The other Bearcats starter, Jarron Cumberland, did not attempt a free throw but was 7 for 11 from the field and led UC with 18 points.
OFFENSE EFFICIENT: UC lowered its season defensive average to 58.4 points per game, which ranks No. 2 nationally. While the Bearcats might never shake their defense-first reputation under Cronin, the offense continues to score at the highest level of Cronin's 12-year UC tenure.
UC is scoring 78.9 points per game, its best under Cronin. Cronin's most potent UC offense averaged 74.3 points last season. Which, incidentally, led the AAC.
Saturday, UC shot a solid 51.2 percent from the field (22 for 43) and held USF to 40 percent. The Bearcats hit 70 percent in the second half (14 for 20), and Cronin could not recall a half where UC shot that well.
UC also had only eight turnovers against USF, which made 13 miscues itself. Evans, now the primary ballhandler at point guard, did not commit a turnover in 37 minutes. Justin Jenifer, who plays both point guard and off-guard, also did not have a turnover in 19 minutes of action.
Cumberland (one turnover in 21 minutes), Clark (one turnover in 33 minutes) and Washington (two turnovers in 30 minutes) also played skillful ball.
MILESTONES: Junior guard Evans scored 16 points Saturday, as he surpassed 1,000 for his career. Evans now has 1,002 points, tied with David "Puffy" Kennedy (UC 1978-81) for 51st on the Bearcats' career list.
Sophomore guard Cumberland (Wilmington High School) also is on pace for 1,000 points. Cumberland has 478 points in just 1 1/2 seasons.
The 1,000 club is getting crowded on this team. Senior forward Clark has 1,211 points. Senior forward Washington has 1,053 points, including his first two seasons at North Carolina State. (At UC, Washington has 649 points.) Junior guard Cane Broome has 1,272 points, most of those (1,136) in his first two years at Sacred Heart University.
SUNSHINE SOJOURN: The UC team returned to its Tampa hotel after Saturday's game, and the Bearcats will stay in the city through Sunday. On Monday, the Bearcats will bus up I-4 to Orlando in preparation for their next game, Tuesday at 7 p.m. against Central Florida.
