Women's basketball RPI updates
We're 123 in NCAA RPI, just up 2 after the FAU win. We're 94 in Sagarin, which is probably a slightly superior rating at this point. It's possible we move up a little (in the Sagarin ratings - those haven't been updated in a day) after A&M beat previously unbeaten Tennessee last night in overtime in College Station.

The rest of the schedule this year

at FIU (301)
at Charlotte (180)
UTEP (126)
ODU (309)
USM (199)
at Louisiana Tech (195 - also play them at home later in year)
WKU (43) - massively important home game on 2/10
at UAB (100)
at MTSU (129)
at Marshall (322)
at UTSA (282)
North Texas (210)

RE: Women's basketball RPI updates
RPI is not a true ranking system. It is a metric developed by the NCAA as one factor (among many) used for selecting teams for post season play.

I think that it is ridiculous that the NCAA has not adopted a more accurate ranking method. The only potential advantage of RPI is that it is relatively transparent. But I think that is a poor trade-off.

If the purpose of your discussion is to consider the possibility of an at large bid to the tournament, then RPI is the correct choice. But our RPI would need to rise to 45 before there would be any chance of that.

If you are looking for the best teams in the conference, then the Sagarin or Massey computer rankings are much more informative.

RE: Women's basketball RPI updates
I just want to keep track of the numbers as the season progresses. I'm pretty confident the RPI will continue to improve. Assuming Olivia Ogwumike returns (which I've heard could happen beginning with the next homestand?), I really don't think we'll lose many more games this season. Probably 1 or 2 on the road, and maybe 1 or 2 at home?

I think if we win the regular season CUSA title, we're in the NIT at the very minimum. 2 or more conference losses and I think we'll be an at-large team, but that's a long way off so I'll just be monitoring the numbers in the meantime.

I think the key is going to be the 4 game span @LT, vs WKU, @UAB, and @MTSU.

RealtimeRPI has Rice losing 3 of those and finishing 23-5 (13-3).

Regular season champs get auto bids to the NIT if they don't get an NCAA bid. (True for men's NIT too.)

Are there enough slots if ALL the reg season champs lose?

NWIT has 64 teams so yes. (Same actually true with NIT with only 32 teams.)

Women's basketball RPI updates
Massey Ratings thru yesterday’s games shows us at #77, which is now #2 in conference. It and Sagarin had earlier ranked us #4 and outside of top 100. Don’t know if Massey updates just once or twice a week but also shows us as up 23 spots since their previous ranking.
RPI is mostly just a poor excuse for using SoS to overload the postseason tournaments with power conference teams.

Up one spot to #4 nationally in the ESPNW mid-major top ten this week. (And only CUSA rep). Graham Hayes has been high on the Owls all season, and not only because of his recognition of names like Langley and Ogwumike.
Also- though I’d assumed our RPI would keep us out of an at-Large, I now think that a regular season title + tourney finalist + national top 25 ranking could sneak us in the field of 64. The way we’re playing I think top 25 is achievable once we’re healthy.

Strange! Why isn’t W Kentucky in the ranking?

Dunno. I sure would. Their only “bad” loss was at Indiana(87) and they’re 1-2 vs Massey Top 20, all close games.

RE: Women's basketball RPI updates
from Realtime RPI:
Rice RPI Rank: 123 SOS Rank: 334
WKU RPI Rank: 46 SOS Rank: 54

WKU has played 8 games against the top-100, and gone 3-5 (worst loss by 18 @UAB, lost by 13 to #2 ND)
Code:
11-10      vs     Missouri      15-2 (3-1)    16     79-76     W
  11-11      at     Iowa      15-3 (3-2)    24     97-104     L
  11-14           Notre Dame      15-2 (4-1)    2     65-78     L
  11-17      at     Indiana      8-11 (1-5)    74     71-73     L
  11-24      vs     Mercer      16-2 (3-0)    75     67-62     W
  12-17      vs     Toledo      12-5 (3-2)    67     70-56     W
  12-21      at     Ball St.      13-2 (3-2)    41     81-93     L
  01-13      at     UAB      12-2 (3-0)    78     61-79     L

Rice has played 4 games against the top-200, going 2-2, with a legitimately bad loss at #287 FIU (5-12):
Code:
11-24           AR Little Rock      9-8 (6-0)    126     58-51     W
  11-26      at     Kansas      11-6 (2-4)    104     65-73     L
  11-29      at     Texas A&M      14-4 (3-1)    15     76-82     L
  12-30           Columbia      6-11 (0-2)    175     67-44     W

I'm proud of what the ladies have done, but they should be playing a much better non-conference schedule. They didn't perform badly against top competition, but the schedule should be upgraded next year. Playing a weak schedule, there is no room for error...

RE: Women's basketball RPI updates
Looks like our ranking went up based on Sagarin from 123 to 109 even though we lost. I guess the close game with Texas A&M has helped us a lot in the rankings since they are ranked 33. UAB has jumped in front of us now with W. Kentucky( UAB - 80, W. Kentucky - 55). I think we can beat both at home if our shots are falling. Out lack of height has hurt us this year by relying on the 3s' but next year will be a different story.
