I remember one of my first interviews on the civilian side of my career. The HR rep said oh you're from Old Dirty U, this was a lady in her 50s so I played it cool and said yes, Old Dominion 04-cheers Then she went on to tell me how many employees they had from Old Dirty and how bad some sucked at their job. Glad I dodged that company they folded a few years after interviewing with them.

Yikes. Thats why I hate the nickname, Ol Dirty. At least when it was Old Drunk, or Over Dose, there was a party association. JMU says theirs stands for "just missed UVA", which isn't a bad thing really. When your brand is "ol dirty", and your own students can't list anything they like about the school more than "diversity" you have a brand problem.

That HR lady was completely unprofessional to even say that. My guess is she likely couldn't have gotten into ODU. Years ago, I had an opposite experience, where I went on a job interview and I told the person I went to ODU. The guy asked "did you graduate", I said yes, and his response was "thats great, ODU isn't that tough to get into, but you need to be pretty smart to graduate from there". I got the job.

When I went to school in the late 90s, a JMU coed said, "you go to Old, Dumb and Ugly" ...

that perfectly explained who were in my 300/400 level mechanical engineering courses with me. that's the sad part!

Maybe we could become SE Virginia State.

Seems to work for Middle Tennessee State and Western Kentucky.

Might as well call it Fake Coastal Carolina University. FCCU, FU for short.

We are often referred to as “The Harvard of the South” so let’s go with that...

How about we keep it simple and go with the less it more philosophy. Get it of the ODU on the jersey's and go back to OLD DOMINION on the jerseys. We need to get away from the alphabet soup moniker and be who we are OLD DOMINION.

As for the 757, that is a selling point, not a positioning point.

Seriously. Theres no point discussing changing the name. Its been that way for over 80 years. You don't give up that kind of name recognition. The only way I would ever consider that if I had a say was if ODU, NSU, CNU and EVMS all merged together or something crazy like that.

How about CWMN?

College of William and Mary Norfolk?

Then we’d finally have a medical school.

Speaking of triple digit numbers, I believe the current "Games since last NCAAT appearance" tally stands at 222

It's cool though because JJ has now won 100 games at ODU. I literally laughed out loud when they announced that at the WKU game and said "he is one of only six coaches to accomplish that at ODU".... I can only name 7 coaches and that goes all the way back to Allen.

Better yet ...I think the region should brand itself as 757VA ! Like RVA, NOVA, etc. It would be better than TVA, HRVA, BCVA, or something like that !

I can't tell you how many times I go on twitter or instagram and see Virginia Tech posting about the 757. "757 plays here" or "Home of the 757"... I understand why they post it but it's a little annoying because we can't keep the recruits that are in our own backyard. I don't see harm something on the court (in a corner) or hanging up at the Ted, maybe a sticker on a helmet. I wouldn't make it our main logo or our main selling point, just a sense of pride.

Hell, I remember reading earlier this year when Bucky Hodges met Taylor Heinicke in the Vikings locker room, all he said was "757". It is a point of pride from people and athletes from this area

To think, if it weren't for that freak accident breaking into his own house, TH could be Case Keenum. I hope TH gets a chance at some point.

I agree. I think a small court sticker. A small patch on the basketball uniform and helmet sticker or uniform patch for football would be a nice addition and a rallying point for our teams. The Fresno State model seems perfect to me.

It also might be an interesting recruiting tactic to start a Mr 757 award for the most valuable player on the football team from the 757 and to really promote that throughout the community. Get young guys growing up and think "I want to be Mr 757". Not sure if you risk alienating players on the team who are not from this area though.

Rebranding is fine, but it needs to be done when you have your best product. When your football team goes 5-7 and the basketball team hasn't won the conference or been to the NCAAs in 7 years, it probably isn't a good time to rebrand because it isn't going to work unless you already have a bandwagon.

I do hope there is a plan in place in event that we do catch lightning in a bottle somewhere. VCU, Utah, and TCU really did well making the most out of their opportunities. George Mason, and to a lesser extent Boise State kind of blew it.

Is that the real number? Somehow that makes it feel 10x worse

Agree with you on most of your examples but take exception to Boise State. If you mean that they couldn't parlay their football success into a better conference, then a) technically they did, going from the WAC to the Mountain West [with an aborted football-only move to the Big East/AAC when it was believed that it could maintain its power-conference status], and b) they are constricted by geography, in which the Pac 12 and Big 12 are the only reasonable options, and lacking academics, which wipes them both off the board.

Otherwise, Boise State has an established football brand that gets higher levels of respect and national TV coverage than most if not all other G5 programs in a given year, and they get an outsize share of conference TV revenues for it. Short of a football invite to a perpetually unstable Big 12, I'm not sure what else they can reasonably do with what they've been given.

George Mason is absolutely an object lesson in how to whiff on a tap-in putt. Maybe it wasn't sustainable but letting Coach L walk sent an unmistakable message to the college basketball world.
