Exclamation ACC could expand to 16 and 17 team formate
Given that the State of Florida is such a rich recruiting ground. I think the ACC should consider expanding to 16 teams in Football.

ACC North
Boston College
Syracuse
Pittsburgh
Louisville
Virginia Tech
North Carolina State
Central Florida
Miami

ACC South
Virginia
Duke
North Carolina
Wake Forest
Clemson
Georgia Tech
Florida State
South Florida

Notre Dame same deal. ACC would have 17 teams for all other sports.

FSU and Miami would never let the conference elevate UCF and USF to equals in the Florida recruiting game. Same with Florida in the SEC. The twins can maybe market themselves as a package to the Big 12, but UConn will get into the ACC before those two do.

RE: ACC could expand to 16 and 17 team formate
Why would Florida State and Miami approve of adding two additional programs to their markets? Why would the Tobacco Road schools in UNC, Duke, Wake and NCST want "new money" so to speak? Why would the Northern schools (BC, SU, Pitt) want to de-emphasize the Northeast even further?

Unless there is a Florida State-defection from the ACC, I don't see it.

You forgot Cincinnati. They have had a bad two year stretch in football, but they'll be back. Current #1 recruiting class in the G5 right now and a strong one last year. Basketball is Steady Eddie. Ohio market not too shabby to be in.

Pittsburgh was part of the same lawsuit.

THIS ^^^^

The only way into the P5 for UCF and USF is the Big XII. And I believe it is more viable than folks think.

As far as the ACC expanding goes, I don't see the conference doing anything for a long time.

It needs to solve the issues regarding scheduling first ... and I think that takes other conferences joining with them (the SEC faces similar issues and could be on board with that too). Fixing this, may stabilize things for the foreseeable future, and that stability could entice smaller conferences to join the SEC and ACC in supporting this scheduling tweak.

Umm...no. That talking point died in 2011 when the ACC invited Pittsburgh. Try again.

Yeah, but the P5 and ACC fanboys, most especially the ACC fanboys, still cling to that talking point like it's some kind of special magical blanky that will make everything they say about UCONN come true.

Syracuse and Pitt were a part of that law suit and they are both in.

If the big guys all expand to 16 members then UConn and Cincy will have new homes in a P5 conference or whatever they will call themselves.

Four teams in Florida? Eww.

Just add West Virginia and UConn and be done with it.

Miami and FSU wouldn't care. But the other 12 teams in the ACC, who all recruit Florida would care.

RE: ACC could expand to 16 and 17 team formate
OU, UT, and ND, plus whoever their +1s (or maybe +2/3 in a b12-to-p12 scenario) are the only ways any P5 will go to 16. With P5 payouts $30M+ those are the only teams that carry their weight enough to justify increasing conference payouts, or at least keeping them even. Everyone else is just more mouths to feed, less money per team, and forces a 9-game conference schedule and the headaches that brings.

UCF and USF together do nothing for existing conferences. I do think one or the other is the best candidate for the B12 if they expand, but not both. And either are a non-starter for the ACC. Having 4 NC teams is bad enough. We don't need 4, or even 3, Florida teams.

ACC is about expanding footprint not concentrating it. ACC will look west towards Texas for a team. Swofford dream is to get Texas and ND as full members but I doubt that happens. If B12 folds, look for TCU or Baylor.

I doubt Texas A&M lets Texas in the SEC but it would be cool for TEXAS and OK to join the SEC. TCU and OSU join the ACC. You could add the TCU vs Texas game and the Bedlam rivalry to the ACC/SEC final game of the season rivalries. Again, not very likely but hey why not dream.

RE: ACC could expand to 16 and 17 team formate
The only way I see the ACC going to 17 is Texas and one of Oklahoma or TCU. If Notre Dame finally joins as a full member then the ACC might wind up at 18 with the other of Oklahoma/TCU, or possibly even Kansas.

At 17 members, the ACC could even let all three of Texas, Notre Dame, and TCU/Oklahoma/Kansas play 4-5 ACC games with a scheduling agreement, and every one of the full members would have a ninth “conference” game.

Unless Swofford is no longer there, the vision will be towards Texas and Ohio. Unless ND wants to join and bring Navy as football only. ACC has moved to Football first and Basketball second in any future expansion. IMHO, ACC is hoping to get some B12 teams if the league dissolves in 2024. 10 years ago, I think UCONN would have been in the ACC hands down. Football is the reason UCONN is not in the ACC now and unless something drastically changes, it won't be in any time soon.
