America East, A-10 and CAA consolidate?
Is there a plausible way for those 3 to merge down into 2? Perhaps north and south? (North=NY state and New England)

No. You're talking 33 schools total (I think) and the A-10 (correctly) considers itself a definite step up in terms of competition and facilities. There'd be little appetite for something like that.

Thanks Bogg! That's exactly what I suspected. My goal was the Comm Ave rivalry in the same conference, and if they weren't already, the other Philly schools together.

Wonder if the America East and the CAA could be consolidated?

Why would two conferences, each of which now has an autobid to the NCAAT, give up one of those bids by consolidating? All you are doing is cutting your per school revenue from the tournament in half.

THIS

But I'll tell you what, I'd be interested in trading Fordham for JMU.

Fordham plays in the smallest gym in the league, JMU has a legitimate arena.
JMU would join Richmond and URI in teams that play A10 basketball and CAA football.

Does JMU basketball really do anything for the A10? What's the point?

No not particularly, but neither does Fordham. 03-lmfao

These conferences are already pretty compact. There's no gain from consolidation.

The other problem is that you assume that schools recruiting, student, and alumni bases correspond tightly with their geographic location. For GW, UR, and Davidson...they look to the NYC metro. GW has more students from Massachusetts than from DC (undergrads).

The A-10, America East, and the CAA have zero problems with geography. Although, St Louis is a bit of an outlier, but the A-10 can afford it. Not a problem.

They're having a good year this year, but I'd add Duquesne to that list. If the A-10 dropped down to 12 by ditching Duquesne and Fordham, I'd be good with that.
