To me its not that they should have or should not have been in the playoff. Its that they were ranked 12th and the folks went crazy when they claimed the national championship - something teams have done for decades. The establishment would have been better-served to keep quiet and say nothing instead of putting their feet in their mouths whenever they defended themselves...

Central Florida beat teams ranked in the final poll, three of them to end the season. Memphis twice, South Florida and Auburn. Plus they had to deal with canceled games due to hurricanes. Don't give me crap about Strength of schedule.

Has anyone here read "The Missing Ring" which is a moaning whine about how unfairly Alabama was treated in 1966 after going undefeated and untied but finishing behind Notre Dame which had intentionally (politically) tied Michigan State? (Sports Illustrated cover story was titled "Tie one for the Gipper") Many Bama fans were just as put out then by that "slight" in voting as the UCF fans this week.

Most years I agree with this assessment, but this year, Alabama in particular, I take some exception to.

Alabama's best win before the playoffs was? LSU(who lost at home to Troy)? Mississippi State(whose best win was???)? If Ole Miss did what Alabama did this year, do you think they make the playoff? Because based off their resume, it was a very iffy decision.(based on watching the team play, they looked like they belonged though-my fear is the selection committee doesn't seem to play by any set standards though)

UCF had extenuating circumstances this year with a hurricane.(I know it doesn't fit the narrative to accept that this actually happened and really jacked their schedule up) UCF won every game on their schedule. They won at Maryland by a ton. They had a margin of victory over 20. I bet that game control statistic that they loved in the past would have been very useful for UCF this year. If it doesn't fit the narrative, why use it though, right? And putting them at 12 was absolutely laughable. It was done to avoid any controversy, and you are a damn fool if you believe otherwise.(you rank them 5 or 6 and you have a lot more bellyaching. At 12, it's far enough away to say that weren't even in the equation)

I don't believe they were better than Alabama or Georgia this year, but if we are gonna crown champions on paper, why play any game. How many games this year have you seen a team win that you thought had no chance? A system that excludes a team that doesn't lose a game, and beats multiple ranked opponents, doesn't make any sense to me.

At the end of the day, as long as the tide is still rolling, all is well though.

I somehow missed that one. Maybe one day when I care about Alabama football I'll read it.

Had you been a college football fan between 1955 and 1985, what team might you have supported? It obviously was not UAB. My entry was to illustrate that there can be similar responses when the "pinching shoe" is on one's own foot rather than someone else's. This year the "shoe is on UCF's foot".

That’s not the case. Bama wasn’t ranked 15th and claims every national title they can. It’s not even close to a similar comparison.

In 1985 i was out of the womb for a year. My dad went to Michigan state though, so i guess it’s cool that they screwed your tide out of another title.

Actually, Mich State got "screwed" as well. Coach Ara knew that Mich State's season ended with that game since under Big 10 rules it could not play in any bowl game while Notre Dame still had a game with 3-7 USC to play the next Saturday. That was why he chose to run out the clock with the tie, knowing ND had an advantage in schedule.
