Thats funny. Ohio is one area I figure would be inclined to not watch.

That's like saying I expect Pittsburgh not to watch the Super Bowl when it's New England vs Atlanta.

Columbus is an Ohio State town, and if you follow Ohio State, you are naturally interested in "big time" college football more generally, because that's what OSU competes in.

I live in Baton Rouge, but when the national title game was Oregon vs Ohio State, I tuned in, because even though my favorite school wasn't involved, it was the national title game of college football.

The notion that you only watch college football if your team is involved is an alien one to me, and I didn't even know such folks existed until i got on boards like this one.

Its not an indictment of the area or thier interest in football. Its just an observation that Ohio State fans were the most likely to have felt shafted by the selection process this year. If there was an area where Big-10 fans might "protest" by not watching--that would be it. There clearly wasnt----Or maybe there was--and the ratings number could have potentially even been bigger. Either way, 28.4 million viewers is a huge number.

http://espnmediazone.com/us/press-releas...year-year/

Actually, it means Ohio St fans are real football fans who understand the selection process agreed to by all 10 FBS conferences, and don’t go out of their way to circumvent the process. I am glad Ohio St fans took the high road.

Final rating is 15.6 and 28.4 million viewers.

http://www.sportsmediawatch.com/2018/01/...mpionship/

In essence, only 15.6% of the TV households watched the game. Telling data point of why customers are cutting the cord and don't want to pay $$$ for sports channels they don't watch.

RE: Alabama/Georgia draws massive 16.7 rating, up 9% over last year!
The ratings this year definitely bucked the trend, which has favored intersectional matchups.
4 of the top 5 games were either North/South or East/West. So were 5 of the top 7.
This despite the fact that Southern teams have fairly dominated the playoff landscape (at least 2 each year and this year 3 teams from the South).

Well there were 4 from the greater South. Oklahoma is more Southwestish these days.

Yes, many drew too many parallels with LSU - Alabama 2011 (the conference angle) and not Alabama - Clemson the last two years (deep south angle).

But LSU vs Alabama wasn't a good comparison, because LSU vs Alabama was a rematch while Alabama vs Georgia wasn't, which made the game much more similar to Alabama vs Clemson, two deep south teams playing.

It was pretty good. This is 3 years old, but pretty sure nothing has changed with over the air broadcasts since ESPN now has the big games. Here are the top viewed games of all time (at least back to 1991): http://www.cleveland.com/datacentral/ind...tball.html

35.6 million - ABC, BCS title game/Rose Bowl, Rose Bowl, Jan. 4, 2006, Texas vs USC.
30.8 million - ABC, BCS title game, Jan. 7, 2010, Alabama vs. Texas
30.4 million - ABC, Rose Bowl, Jan. 1, 1996, USC vs. Northwestern.
30.1 million - ABC, Sugar Bowl, Jan. 1, 1993, Alabama vs. Miami.
30.0 million - NBC, Orange Bowl, Jan. 1, 1995, Nebraska vs. Miami.
29.6 million - NBC, Orange Bowl, Jan. 1, 1991, Colorado vs. Notre Dame.
29.1 million - ABC, BCS title game/Fiesta Bowl, Jan. 3, 2003, Ohio State vs. Miami.
29.0 million - ABC, Rose Bowl, Jan. 1, 1998, Michigan vs. Washington State.
28.81 million, NBC, Orange Bowl, Jan. 1, 1994, Florida State vs. Nebraska.
28.80 million - FOX, BCS title game, Jan. 8, 2007, Ohio State vs. Florida.
28.4 million, ABC, Rose Bowl, Jan. 2, 1995, Penn State vs. Oregon.
28.3 million - ESPN, national semifinal/Sugar Bowl, Jan. 1, 2015, Ohio State vs. Alabama.
28.1 million - ESPN, national semifinal/Rose Bowl, Jan. 1, 2015, Oregon vs. Florida State.

Good points both. I think the rematch thing is a bid deal. I do think it's worth noting that OU/UGA drew better (6th all-time) - in an earlier time slot - than Clemson/Bama (not top 10). It included teams from 2 regions (even if neighboring regions).

So Georgia-Alabama would be 12th on this list despite being on cable (#2 the Ohio St.-Oregon game 1-12-15 which hadn't been played as of the 2015 article).

It wasn't just the rematch and it wasn't just that the initial game was boring. It had to do with a 2 team format where LSU had to play the same team twice instead of someone else who hadn't already had a shot at them. It wasn't fair to LSU or Oklahoma St. or the other 120+ FBS schools not named Alabama. I didn't watch it, but I did watch the first Alabama-LSU game.

They gotta do something about the timing of that second CFP game. IIRC, Alabama vs Clemson didn't start until after 9 PM eastern time, and they kicked it off when OU/UGA was still going on, and nobody was going to turn away from that game at that time.

I ended up only watching the first half because I was just too bushed from a long day.

do think a big part of that was the quality of the individual games. It got to be 24-6 with 5:26 to go in 3rd quarter, and pretty much everyone knew that game was over.

Also, I don't think the time slot means anywhere near as much on New Years Day- as most everyone has the day off. Rose Bowl almost always beats the Sugar Bowl- think only year it hasn't in recent times was in 2015 where Alabama/Ohio St got 28.5 million to only 28.3 million for Oregon/Florida St...

I think the holdup there is the Rose Bowl. With the parade and all the tradition, it has its' set early afternoon start time.

I think its TV doing it. The Rose Bowl was a night game when it was the BCS title game. The parade gets over in plenty of time to get to the game even with all the traffic. There's tens of thousands of people in pre-game parties around the stadium.

Just saying it's always been in that 1-2PM slot on New Years Day since I can remember, other than the few instances of the BCS title game, semis, NYD on a Sunday, etc. Thats why the Sugar Bowl has a later start time, and then if OT happens, watch out.

1 vs. 2 makes a pretty big difference. Then the 2nd game can start at 8 (5 Pacific) instead of 9 eastern.

IMO, that's the key. Nine is just too late to start. EST kickoff should ideally be 8, that's a very big difference.

But LSU vs Alabama wasn't a good comparison, because LSU vs Alabama was a rematch while Alabama vs Georgia wasn't, which made the game much more similar to Alabama vs Clemson, two deep south teams playing.

Good points both. I think the rematch thing is a bid deal. I do think it's worth noting that OU/UGA drew better (6th all-time) - in an earlier time slot - than Clemson/Bama (not top 10). It included teams from 2 regions (even if neighboring regions).

The Rose Bowl was never played on January 1 as the BCS title game, although it was played on that date in years it wasn't the title game.
