I was hoping UCF would finish 5th. Three in the final top 25 wasn't a bad showing for the AAC.

More statistics:

This was the 50th season in which the final AP poll was taken after the bowl games. (Hard to believe they took the final poll before the bowls up until then, but that's what they did.)

Here are all the teams in those 50 years that finished undefeated and didn't finish #1 in the AP poll, with their final AP ranking. Didn't know the list was so long until I looked it up.

Glad to see UCF get some votes, but 6th is a slap.
Kiffen’s FAU will be first G5 in the playoff next year after taking out #3 OU and #6 UCF.

Cannot knock your competitive spirit. Should be a great game against the C-USA and Shula Bowl champion next season. 04-cheers

I called it for UCF .... 6th, and that Memphis would cling to #25. Good showing indeed.

Can't believe Memphis stayed ranked. Means Iowa St. beat 3 ranked teams. Wonder how many could claim that this year. Probably nobody outside the top 6. And they had two top 10 wins.

edit-forgot about #10 Auburn and MSU. So Auburn was 3-4 vs. ranked teams and 2-3 vs. the top 6.

Memphis was lucky a bunch of teams just ahead of them lost as well. Somebody had to remain ranked.

FWIW, USF becomes the first AAC team to finish ranked in back to back seasons.

USF and Memphis are also the only AAC teams to finish ranked twice since the AAC stopped being AQ in 2014. Both times, Memphis has been ranked #25 in the final poll (2014, 2017). Houston, Navy, and UCF have all been ranked once in the final AP poll.

There were 7 undefeated teams before the bowls. In the Sugar Bowl, #3 Notre Dame (10-0) beat then #1 Alabama (11-0) to win the title.

Ohio State and Michigan both finished 10-0-1 as Big Ten co-champions. By conference rules, Ohio State went to the Rose Bowl. At the time the Big Ten would only allow one team to play in a bowl, so Michigan stayed home.

Oklahoma was the Big 8 champion at 10-0-1, but they were on probation, so they stayed home as well.

Then independent Penn State defeated #13 LSU in the Orange bowl, and #15 Miami(O) beat unranked Florida in the Tangerine Bowl.

1973 was the last year the UPI issued its final poll before any bowl games were played, giving the nod to Alabama as its national champion.

I actually see this as the opposite. 6th was a spot higher than I would have guessed at best if you told me the bowl results beforehand. They beat out a 13-1 Wisconsin team that was not far from undefeated themselves. I think this was a lot of respect.

I thought the exact same thing.

I would have placed Wisconsin ahead of them but ultimately, the gap between 6th and 7th is minuscule at best.

It's instructive that even with the "Big Win" over 3-loss Auburn, UCF still wouldn't make a 4-team playoff if decided by the final AP poll.

UCF is this year's Rodney Dangerfield of college football.

At least give them 3rd place.

Ind. Notre Dame beat SEC champ Alabama #1 vs. #2 in a much hyped Sugar Bowl.
Ind. Penn St. beat LSU in the Orange.
B10 champ Ohio St. beat USC in Rose.
Big 10 co-champ Michigan didn't play in a bowl (B10 only went to Rose then)
Big 8 champ OU was on probation and didn't go to bowl (tie was to USC whose losses were to Notre Dame and Ohio St.)
MAC champ Miami beat Florida in the Tangerine Bowl.

I understand your pain, my school's rival won a national championship last year too. It gets better over time. 05-stirthepot
