RIP Raymond Godman "The Tennessee Bo-Weevil"
Godman was actually a circle-track driver in the Memphis area in the late 1940s before being called to duty in Korea in 1951. It will be 63 years ago this Sept. 17 that his life changed forever, when a young 23-year-old Marine from Fox Company, Fifth Regiment, 1st Marine Division “got shot up” by a sniper’s bullet, paralyzing him from the waist down.

Godman continued to race and promote drag racing in Memphis, which led to him opening Lakeland Dragstrip on July 4, 1960.

He was a major player in the racing community for sure. Sadly outside of the racing community he was not recognized by his own hometown as well as he was internationally.Inaugural member of the NHRA Hall of Fame. Long time member of the Highland Hundred. Loved his Tigers football

I still have time slips from racing at Lakeland.
Until they built the large houses on the east side of Canada Road near Harvester Park, you could see the light poles from the oval track that Lakeland had.

Do not know if the lodge hall is still there but not far from them on the east side of Canada Rd was a clearing where gas line markers were located. If you enter the woods in that area you were able to walk to the old speedbowl location. Other than the shells of a concession stand and a few old cars dumped in what was the pit area nothing much remained. But you were still able to make out where the track was located. They may have cleared it and built on that location.

To clarify for those under 50 the Speedbowl was not located at the same location as the drag strip and road course. It was on what is now the north side of I-40 close to Memphis-Arlington Rd. Friday night races at the Speedbowl meant traveling out Summer ave to Canada Rd.
