Throw a few games on NBC to sweeten the pot. People are tired of espn...could this lineup offer a decent alternative for college football, basketball and baseball viewers?
I’d say it would be a nice compliment to the Olympics and Notre Dame for NBC.

Ive said for a while that there is money to be made in becoming the network of record for G5 football on Saturdays. Do it right.

Start with a saturday "Game Day" type show from a college campus location. Do a daily show recapping news from the G5. Treat the G5 as seriously as ESPN treats the P5.

To me its like what Fox News did. They looked at the TV News landscape and noticed that conservatives were largely ignored. In fact, when conservatives were not ignored on national news, it was because they were being laughed at. Fox realized that conservatives made up around half the audience and chose to cater their news to that ignored group. Fox News is now the top cable news network.

Fox, ABC/ESPN/ESPN2/ESPNU, and CBS are all blanketing the P5 with coverage. Go where they arent. Engage the ignored G5 audience. That audience is probably close to a third of the college football audience and they are completely ignored (or lauged at when not being ignored).

Go wall to wall with G5 coverage on NBC-Sports on Saturdays. Use a G5 game to lead into or follow the Notre Dame game on NBC Broadcast. The G5 is somewhere between 25-35% of the total college football audience...thats a large college educated affluent audience just begging to find a TV home. That group buys detergent and Toyota's too. Truth be told--CBS-Sports is in the best position to execute this strategy. They already have the rights to games in the AAC, MW, MAC, and CUSA. They just need to buy some Sunbelt games and get serious about doing a Saturday road show.
An "off-brand" GameDay would last three weeks before any luster it gained would be lost. Few viewers would watch, hence why nobody does it. FS1 had the money at first and knew it wasn't a great idea.

Heck, Barstool is more into that demo and their attempts via Facebook wasn't even close to being a success.

To your detergent analogy, GameDay is Tide and any competing show wouldn't be All, Persil, or even Arm and Hammer, it'd be Xtra. SEC Nation is like the Gain to their own Tide.

Of course FOX went after the exact same audience as ESPN. Im suggesting you go after the audience ESPN ignores. ESPN gets them too right now--but only because they have nowhere else to go. Your audience wont be as big as ESPN--but you also arent paying as much for your programming.

Putting UCF vs BYU on NBC, won't equal the ratings of Oklahoma St vs Iowa St on ABC.

Those leagues aren't with NBC because NBC knows it won't deliver the ratings it wants. Notre Dame fans aren't sticking around after/before the game to see MWC and CUSA action.

Clearly you haven’t done much research bc your example is possibly the worst 2 you could’ve provided. BYU has a national following and usually rates high and when Ucf has been prime time they’ve delivered high ratings.

I think this is spot on, Iam all for this, hope it happens soon

This would be like Fox News was when it rolled out in the late 90's. Ignored by CNN (ESPN) Then mocked by CNN (ESPN)Then hated by CNN (ESPN) Thrn kicking the living Shite out of CNN (ESPN) All the while generating ratings and proving that the P5 thing is more hype than reality. For all those who dislike ESPN....lets push this to happen!!!
Right now the cartel posters are ignoring me. Can't wait for the first cartel 5 fan to mock me. Then fight me. Then I win.

Is that what this is about - you winning the internet?

I really don't think people will switch to NBC because they "dislike ESPN". We can all have our opinion as to what percentage of sports fans would prefer to watch G5 teams, if only they had the chance. But the one who is paying the bills is the one who is taking all the risk here. Hasn't NBC had its chance to bid on these properties before now? What's different?

This is the exact lineup that CBS Sports Network has every Saturday.

I would rather AAC just do tier one or 2 with NBC and leave rest out of it.

Not only would it not be a ratings success, for NBC it would be bad optics. They can play the not-interested card right now, carrying only Notre Dame football (an obvious prestige get) with their other sports. But if they go all-in on G5 (or even just the AAC), it's going to look as though they're settling for lower-tier football than their broadcast counterparts. I can't imagine them paying however much they'd pay so they can offer the fourth or fifth-best (or worse) matchup in a time block behind CBS, ABC, ESPN, ESPN2, Fox, and possibly FS1 and the Big Ten/SEC networks. Plus it could hinder their ability to get a power-conference contract down the line if they decide to go that route.

Wasn't the idea of NBC bidding on the AAC contract and showing an AAC game of the week before/after ND games discussed during the last AAC TV contract negotiations?

If I recall, NBC wasn't too interested in bidding against ESPN for the contract then. Has anything changed?

I can easily see NBC going all in on the AAC and paying maybe half or a little less than the what the p5 makes along with maybe some better bowl tie-ins and a NY6 bowl tie . I think they would them declare them a p6 conference while savings millions. They've already shown interest in the AAC, and now that they have concrete ratings and on field/court data to go by it'll be a win-win for both. However they've never shown any interest at all in any of the g4 conferences whatsoever. The AAC has never failed to deliver when given a big stage opportunity. NBC could create an entire day of college football having an AAC opener before every Notre Dame game. They also would be gaining 1-2 extra Notre Dame games yearly because of the Notre Dame vs Navy games and their willingness to play some of our other teams like Temple, SMU, Tulane. I mean how many great games could the AAC deliver them through h/h deals with the big boys knowing that their away games against a Memphis or UCF would be on NBC of a rather than la tech or App st. Not sure, but there's some reasons to believe why it would work. Let's say that only a few AAC/CUSA/MWC conference match ups bring ratings...games like UCF vs USF, Boise vs San Diego St, Houston vs Navy etc. the AAC and MWC, BYU have a nice amount of P5 home games coming up. From O week to week 4 (5 weeks) NBC-SN would have Saturday's full of great games to show like Florida St @ Boise, Tennesee @ BYU, Nebraska @ Cinci, West Virginia @ ECU, Oklahoma @ Temple, Utah @ BYU. These are just a few of the games scheduled for the future. Use those 5 weeks games and a game day live tail gate party at each of those games and by week 6 you've built some momentum for the Houston vs SMU game, Boise vs San Diego St conference games, plus the late season BYU vs MWC games and Army @ Air Force ...Plenty of good inventory. I think it's worth a 6 year experiment. Could blow up into something huge.

Yes. Then the AAC was an unknown quantity with no track record. Heck it was basically called a dead conference walking. They were willing to pay a very nominal fee to see if it could work. They offered great time slot but very little cash. Another difference is that ESPN doesn't need all of our content anymore thereby allowing NBC to offer a decent contract for what they need while allowing for ESPN to get the stuff they want like great replacement games when the Big or Sec or Acc aren't available. As is CBS is buying our extra content from ESPN rather than showing some of the other g5 conference content that they already own07-coffee3

The problem is that NBC has never shown one bit of interest in any other non p5 conference other the AAC and that was when the AAC was a bigger risk than all the of the g5s combined. I could easily see NBC brokering a deal to pay the AAC enough to add maybe Byu and either Boise or Sdsu. I think the rest of the g4 would be considered not worth much at that point

You could say that, but it wouldn't be true. Tracking conference ratings for the G5 have shown the AAC leads the pack (esp. since full membership). The next closest, BSU, ave. viewership is middling to lower tier AAC ave. viewership. Hence, why networks such as ESPN and CBSsports have opted to pick up AAC conference games vs. other G5 above and beyond/maxing out contract minimums/maximums. BTW, MACtion gets good ratings even ahead of BSU.

Not that this means that NBC will offer big dollars or any dollars at all. But, it does show that AAC conference games as an entity, get good ratings (among G5 comparables), not just one or two teams.

ETA: Here's 2016 and 2015 G5 ratings. Earlier comparisons can be found and I'll post 2017 when I get back in town. http://csnbbs.com/thread-817438.html http://csnbbs.com/thread-767624.html

We had just Louisville and Boise State and etc, and nbc offered peanuts an insulting amount bc we had went open market and rebuffed ESPN. Per our contract with ESPN we have to allow them to match, so they matched but offered more exposure so we took it.

You may well be right but the issue is that they obviously didn't think it was worth it because they didn't continue showing that package of games when they could've then as well as now,and done so for pennies on the dollar 07-coffee3

If I recall, NBC wasn't too interested in bidding against ESPN for the contract then. Has anything changed?

Could be right about NBC having no interest in anyone else but I do remember watching some TCU MWC conference games on NBC-SN (it had a different name then) as well as watching some CUSA games on NBC-SN.

It was called Versus back then until NBC bought them. The MWC had a contract with them and CBS Sports which bought CSTV, the startup network the MWC ditched ESPN for. Versus showed lots of rodeo and MMA. But looking back, the MWC did not have a bad tv exposure compared to what they have now. They were on CBS Sports, Versus and The Mtn.

As far as NBC Sports, they’re really not relevant on Saturday afternoon/nights. How many figure skating and Tonya Harding/Nancy Kerrigan documentaries reruns can they air?

Well, NBC Sports does have a contract to televise ND home hockey games on certain Friday and Saturday nights (ND is currently ranked #1 in college hockey by one publication and are 11-0 in Big Ten conference play....there, I got my plug in) during college hockey season.

So...some of those time slots during football season are already contractually filled with the ND hockey deal.

Before Versus, it was called Outdoor Life. It was mostly a hunting and fishing channel going up against the Outdoor Channel.

Yes, what NBC-SN was before was Versus which used to show MWC, CUSA (the AAC now) Big 12 and PAC 10 Games. They did this until 2012 I think. Versus also showed weekly boxing that had decent name fighters. I liked Versus.
