After the game, Marquette coach Mike Deane trashed Birmingham and the UAB fans who weren't at the game. The were 4976 in attendance, but he said the fans aren't a factor because there were not enough of them at the game. "This team is 11-4. They have great talent, but the fans aren't there. I mean, there ain't much to do around here. This ain't the hottest town in America, so I don't know where the people are. This team deserves to have the building packed."

Blazer Birthdays

Born on this day in 1973 was Anthony Thomas. Thomas played at UAB from 1994-1996. He transferred to UAB from UAB-Walker College as a junior. In his first year, he became the best player on the team after Carlos Williams went down with a season ending injury. He made the all Great Midwest Newcomer team his first year, averaging 14.1 ppg and 7.2 rpg. In his senior year, with Williams back, he averaged 11.1 points per game. He left UAB mid season under a cloud, when he was arrested for hitting his girlfriend, a former women's player. I thought Thomas was kicked off the team.

Same thing. "Bartow agreeing with his decision" meant that he didn't think he needed to be on the team either.

According to newspaper articles at the time, Bartow suspended him and didn't take him to Memphis. When he returned Thomas told him he didn't want to play anymore and Bartow agreed. The article also said that Bartow later felt he shouldn't have suspended him after he read the police report.
