Good article. And let's not forget that he can practice from Day 1. That will make Nate a better player and relieve Paul Rowley from the responsibility of guarding Nate in practice. Andy, I think, will make his presence felt--if not known--right away!

Any word on whether he'll have 1 or 2 years of eligibility? Big difference! Is he even pursuing the 2-year option?

I think that ship has sailed on the extra year once it was ruled on and denied his freshman year at Wisconsin. I could be 100% wrong, but I doubt they are even trying to appeal the previous ruling. If Big 10 Wisconsin can't bend the NCAA to their wishes, what can little ole W&M accomplish?

The only other possibility, which I haven't heard is a possibility, is that he somehow graduates from Wisconsin this year. Then he could play immediately and not lose a year. Total unrealistic long shot.

WMSB: Meet Andy Van Vliet, W&M's 7'0" Wisconsin Transfer
There was a reference in one of the core Wisconsin sports blogs that Wisconsin had not made any effort to appeal, but that it would not typically be done until before a player's last year, implying that it may have been pursued if there was mutual interest. I think that leaves the door open, and is dependent on the player's interest in one more year. The burden has to be on the player/school to convince that the player gained no real advantage in that interim year above and beyond any other player who was attending school. W&M's chance of a favorable ruling vs Wisconsin's chance is another matter.

Hey guys...you need to check up on your W&M sports history.

William & Mary has been fielding basketball teams since the 1905-06 season and had some pretty good ones in the late 20s and early 30s. Somebody gave you incorrect info that basketball started in 1936.

1936 appears to be when they moved to the Southern Conference, but yeah, not the first year with a team

I was waiting for someone to make a crack about having had season tickets in those days.

Good catch! I had used the Wiki page for that one, which only dates back to 1936. Sports Reference confirms what you're saying -- putting our first season as 1905-1906 (4-1 record).

Updating the article now!

Yep, lost to Hampton Industrial, by 7-6, but did have a big win later, over Newport News YMCA, by 22-19. Woo-Hoo.

The offense really blossomed after that loss to Hampton Industrial.

That's the last time we played defense.

Well, maybe if we went back to peach baskets our defense would improve.

Yeah, the stoppage to get the ladder and retrieve the ball out of the peach basket would certainly allow us to set up our defense.
