Women open up conference season at UNT
The women's RPI improved a bit after the 23-point Columbia blowout but it's still only 137 which just seems ridiculously low for a 10-2 team. There are tons of examples of teams ahead of Rice which are nuts, like a 3-9 Hampton team sitting at 132 after breaking its 6-game losing streak with a 2-point win at home versus Columbia.

North Texas has been decent at home but so-so on the road. This will be one of our toughest tests in awhile. Sunday we host UTSA at home and that's another RPI drag as they are pretty bad. A&M - one of our two losses - almost beat South Carolina on the road last week.

Supposedly the two players who could return for us were both in sweats as opposed to street clothes at the last home game (Olivia Ogwumike and Sydne Wiggins) but I'm not sure if that means either is close to seeing action.

a lot more of us lay folk will be seeing rice in the "others receiving votes" for the top 25 than will be reviewing RPI, IMO

One advantage for us is that the majority’s of our OOC games were on the road while UNT played the bulk of theirs at home. UNT has already played one CUSA game losing at La Tech 61-53 Wednesday night.

Rice leads 15-10 after 1Q, despite 0-4 shooting from Nicole. Wendy Knight leading the way with 8 points and 2 boards.

21 - 21 at half, despite 2-11 combined shooting by Nicole and Erica. Erica has pulled down 8 rebounds, however. Wendy and Gabby leading the scoring with 8 and 7 points, respectively. An uncharacteristic 7 TOs has hurt.

Rice leads 35 - 31 after 3Q in what has turned into a defensive tug of war.

Up 44-41 with 2:13 to go. Timeout Rice to hopefully quell a 9-0 UNT run.

Ugh. UNT on a ref-aided 9-2 run to take their first lead since very early. 16 TOs has been a killer for us (vs. only 7 for UNT).

Don't think we've deserved to win this game, but those last two calls were abhorrent. Clear by the movement of the UNT player that the ball was off her (even if you couldn't really see it on replay), and then I don't think there was an inch of contact on the final UNT shot.

Rice wins 50-49. Interesting game. UNT was an absolute brick wall on defense. Also threw away a 12-point lead in the matter of minutes toward the end. Can't imagine Langley will be too happy, but a road win is a road win regardless.

Great inbound pass by Nicole, Erica fouled, and makes both FTs to give Rice lead with 1.1 seconds left.

Wow impressive win nonetheless. Ogwumike is clutch at the free throw line. Gametracker says it was 3 free throws and a 51-49 final?

Gametracker has Rice 51-49 with 1 second. Guess the scorekeeper got confused by the officiating.

Gametracker sez we won 51-49 and that Erica nailed 3FT at the end.

Either way glad we escaped this one with a W and were solid at the end!!!

Impressive isn't the word I'd use, but a road win is a road win.
