RE: UT QB's
I don't believe the video was posted to refute your comments. Your follow up comments were good points, as well. Mitch looks like a gamer with excellent athletic ability. He does show nice arm strength in some of the later passes on the video. I am a little concerned about his mechanics. Toledo's back-ups seem to come in playing in the wildcat formation, largely running the ball. Maybe I am not seeing it right, but I would like to see more back-up QB play during the season. Toledo had this particular reason to play more QB's in 2017.

RE: UT QB's
Things can be confusing when you watch back-up QB's play. The best example I can think of is when Ryan Huzjak (sp?) had his senior year in 1996 after a very good 1995 season. Every once in a while, sophomore Chris Wallace would get in - and he was horrible. When I found out he was going to be the starting QB for 1997 and the opening game was against Purdue - I figured we were screwed big time. He had a gun for an arm and could also run the ball effectively. That was back in the days when catching a football was not a strong suit for us, but on a couple of occasions, I think the receivers made catches because the ball was indented into their pads. Bolden also did not impress in his early days. I believe Guadagni comes out of high school more highly rated than either Wallace or Bolden. That doesn't mean much, only that if they can play - they will prove it when they get on the field. The guy that probably fooled most of us was Clint Cochran. He had a huge game against Iowa State in what might have been his debut - or the second game he started. I think most people projected him to be an All-MAC performer based on that one game. That turned out to be a career game for him. He took his highly developed brain and put it to better use in the medical profession. I don't think he even attempted to play his senior year.

RE: UT QB's
at the college level a gamer at QB can win. That tends to not apply at the pro level but plenty of examples-Tebow, Manziel, Matt Johnson at BG of guys who don't have great arms or mechanics but are super successful in college because they know the game, have presence and can make clutch plays. I don't know enough about Guadagni to call it, just that his rep is as a gamer, he won big in HS and he's a real good athlete who can run.

Clint got a degree in bio-engineering at UT. Got his medical degree at UT, did a residency at Michigan and now is a pediatrician in Ann Arbor.

I recall some back-up for Harnish at NIU who came I late in a blowout. Couldn’t wait to play NIU the next year cause that kid had NO business in D1football. Name was Lynch or something?

Am I mistaken but didn't Cochran get hurt? I think that had more to do with his discontinued production and that he made no illusions his goal was medical, not football. He wasn't going to risk that brain. I think UT did well in their support of his goals.

Aaron Opelt, I remember some of his downfield blocks. Kid was a gamer.

Don't think he was hurt - at least nothing to the point where he could no longer play. He wasn't effective and Toledo moved on with Opelt and another that I can't think of right now. Cochran actually finished out the year when Oppelt was injured as I remember it. Then he discussed with Amstutz about not coming back and playing his senior year and focusing on medicine. He was the back-up to Gradkowski as a freshman, and became the starter as a sophomore - but was benched by mid-season.

I just looked up his sophomore year - and in the Kansas game we won, with freshman Barry Church taking a pick six 84 yards (still remember that one) Cochran was 15 of 47 passing for 136 yards. That was the beginning of the end.

Looking at the schedule - he did not play against Pittsburgh at Heinz Field and it was Opelt and Brandon Summers (who threw a pick six to a defensive lineman) who took over at QB. Cochran played in the last 2 games of the year. 2007 was pretty much the same except he played very little all year. He didn't even play in the Iowa State game - even though he threw for 367 at Ames 2 year prior.

Had to look a lot of that up, but seeing some of those games brought back some memories of each game. Still remember driving to the Pittsburgh game and getting pulled over 4 miles from my house at 4:30 in the morning. Someone had robbed a Burger King - and I decided I didn't need to keep sitting at a red light with no one around. So after stopping and waiting for no one at the red light, I just went through it. Little did I know the police were sitting in another parking lot looking for the suspects. They let me off without a ticket. They understood why I just treated the light like a stop sign and had better things to do. But they also told me not to do it again...

I also seem to recall Cochran having an injury. I want to say shoulder. It wasan't a major injury but a lesser injury that he never fully seemed to recover from.

He was hurt during the 2006 season and missed about 3 or 4 games as I recall. That was when Toledo started using Summers and eventually took the redshirt off Opelt. He came back at the end of the year and was full go for 2007. Opelt had pretty much taken over by then, Summers transferred out (his younger brother stayed and was a fairly good LB/DE). Cochran only played in 5 games his junior year, and those games were spread out during the year. Funny thing is, a guy named D.J. Lenehan who I barely remember - had 2 big games that year as QB when he played the entire game against both Liberty and then Buffalo and had a QB rating of 162.1 and 131.4 - then only appeared in 3 more games after that and threw 19 passes in those 3 games in mop-up duty. He did not come back for 2008. Cochran started and played most of the final game of the year, with Lenehan having 1 of his mop-up roles in that game. Opelt was hurt and could not play. That was Lenehan's only season with the Rockets. He may have been the one who got hurt who did not come back - don't know.

Opelt threw all but 5 of the Rocket's passes in 2008, with 2 thrown by Nick Moore and 1 by the punter - B.J. Claus. Cochran did not return to play that year - and it was the last for Amstutz as HC. Our back up was Alex Pettee.

I appreciate the recall on the QB situation. It makes me feel good about UT QB situation these days. It is tooooo bad Opelt got hurt. There was no depth in those days. He still has to be cherishing the win over Michigan. Whoop whoop! Cochran just didn't have any wheels. Lenehan looked like a talented QB. I wish he would have hung around.

Cochran was a drop back QB trying to run a Spread Offense. Needed better protection.

That explains it. Regardless, glad he is doing well. Sounds like he certainly is living up to his potential.

Cochran took a huge hit in the final OT at Iowa State. Don’t recall if there was a flag but I seem to recall that it was on the late side.

DJ Lenahan transferred back closer to Home to Seton Hall. He wasn't injured. Just wanted to play.

There is a blurb online that says DJ was dismissed from the Toledo team. I have no personal knowledge of why he left Toledo.

That should read Seton Hill, not Hall. Both PA schools. Hall is much closer to his home. My mistake.

Yep! Old news. It's not worth bothering with. There are more exciting things in Rocket lore.

Opelt was the most talented of the recent QBs, in my opinion. More talented than Bruce or Logan. Opelt had it all, arm legs, drive. Too bad he was injured much of his time.
