RE: UCF claims a National Championship. Why are they doing it?
Since the NCAA is essentially a pawn to the P5 programs, expansion of the playoffs will never happen until they decide they want even more money.
And then it'll be rigged in their favor, because if this was based on what is good for the entire FBS membership, there shouldn't be just one slot reserved for a G5 program.

There are 130 FBS schools, P5 conferences include 70 (so not including independents), 70 constitutes 54 percent. If three spots in an 8-team field went to G5, that would still only be 37.5% instead of 46%.
THAT WILL NEVER HAPPEN, but the truly equitable formula would be to include TWO schools from the G5 ranks. That would mean 75% of the field would still belong to the P5 -- SEC, B1G, ACC, Big XII, and PAC12 -- champions plus the next best program.

So the best scenario is for an 8-team field and guaranteeing one G5 berth.
Do away with either the bye week or one non-conference game to allow for the one additional game that four schools -- out of 130 -- would have to play to get to the championship. And if the NCAA had any power, limit every P5 program to no more than seven home dates out of 11 games (conference and non-conference combined).

Of course REALITY is the same as taxes, the rich create the rules and loopholes to ensure they and only they get richer.

RE: UCF claims a National Championship. Why are they doing it?
The membership of FBS, driven by the P5, has basically punted on having an actual sanctioned NCAA championship in football, outsourcing it to what amounts to the football NIT. (Note that the NIT is older than the NCAA basketball tournament and for at least the first few years of the NCAAs, was still of higher stature). They do this because it keeps the money in their hands and away from the NCAA collectively and allows them to basically ignore having to give the full membership of FBS actual access to a post-season.

In the absence of an actual, official NCAA national champion (with an NCAA trophy and everything) what exists remains nothing more than the muscled up version of the old, correctly identified, "mythical national champion."

The P5, with their TV and bowl committee buddies have, over the last 20 years created increasingly elaborate versions of the same thing there has always been- pretend championships.

So if UCF, or anyone else wants, I say go ahead and declare it.

The best part of this is the attention it is getting. It is getting into the minds of people that the expansion needs to happen. Haven't heard this much talk of it in a while

Definitely.

Yesterday, UCF had a national championship parade at Disney World. Today, the city of Orlando is having a celebration/block party on Church Street in downtown Orlando, near the Amway Center.

I believe that change is coming to the playoff and a lot sooner than anyone thought it would.

With them finishing in single digits this season will most likely get them preranked
To start the season next year. If they somehow go undefeated again they will have a chance/be in the conversation For the playoff. This is how a team really only has a chance in the G5 is to be pre ranked IMO. Unless you have our schedule next season and someone in the MAC or conference you are in has a great year that you beat towards end of season to keep everyone from saying how bad the conference schedule is.

Yes UCF was 6th in the AP Top 25, 10th in the Coaches Poll, 8th in the CBS Sports 130, and 12th in the Playoff Rankings to close the 2017 season.
However, with the coaching change, graduation losses, hype given to other incoming classes, you can bet there will be P5 programs like Wisconsin, Auburn, Notre Dame, TCU, USC, Miami-FL, Penn State that will leapfrog UCF.
They may be somewhere between 11 and 18 in the 2018 preseason poll, but with a non-conference list of North Carolina, Florida Atlantic and Pittsburgh, plus another undefeated run, they still will not be in the play-off conversation. The P5s, ESPN, Kirk Herbs---t, Paul Whinebaum, etc., will make certain either the B1G or PAC12 don't get left out.

You could see some public pressure build for UCF if the situation were to work out just right. Have bama and OSU go 13-0 and while the SEC and B1G second place teams both have 2 losses. That may eliminate 2 teams from either of those conferences. Then you just need an upset in the title game of the ACC or big12 by a team too far down in the rankings to jump up to 4.

UCF could start the season ranked 12 and creep up as teams in front of them lose. I really think there would be a lot of public pressure to put them in given the fact they will have won 27 games in a row. Theoretically just to the public pressure point...you could repeat this scene for x number of seasons in a row and eventually the committee would have no choice but to put them in, schedule strength be damned.

UCF is more or less in the same position we were after the Orange Bowl season. Great opportunity to build on an historic season. The question for UCF, just like it was for us, is can you take advantage of it? Another great season could result in a big step up for them. Won't be easy - lost their HC (who also took some UCF commits with him), three studs with eligibility left just declared for the NFL draft, a much tougher schedule and everyone will be gunning for them.

UCF won the Fiesta Bowl in 2013 and beat Georgia in the Liberty Bowl in 2010. UCF is pushing down the same road as Boise now with multiple big seasons. Much more so than NIU which as years go by is starting to look more like the Sugar Bowl Hawaii or Cotton Bowl WMU than UCF / Boise. Crazy that UCF was a bad MAC team not all that long ago.
