We rebranded from Texas Western to UTEP 50 years ago. Now a days I don’t think that going as El Paso will help us. It will most likely damage us even further. We have a bad reputation as a city. Most of it is media generated that tries to portray El Paso as some illegal immigration sanctuary lawless city where cartel members run around decapitating innocents. We just need to win.

My early guess is that the Texas schools wouldn't be allowed to rebrand by UTAustin.

Upper Nebraska Community College.
Sounds Legit!

Yeah, but lots of others simply use UNCC cause they know it aggravates Charlotte fans.

This should be your goal. Taunting from other fan bases means that you are relevant to them (and perhaps even feared by them). Our own personal example: Empty Sue.

'Til that happens, you are just Charlotte to me.

I doesn't help that athletics goes by Charlotte yet the University goes by that other name. Our current chancellor loves Chapel Hill so he won't even begin to think about changing the name. I have a feeling a total name change will be our next crusade once we have a new chancellor in place.

The Trustees won't allow. They would rather us go by Alabama - Birmingham. That's why we did the only two correct versions are The University of Alabama at Birmingham or UAB hoping most would just use UAB.

When Coach Hasse went back to using Birmingham jerseys it caused quite an uproar and there was a falling out with our new dumb*** AD about it. This was push back from the Trustees I'm told.

We would love to separate and be BU but until then UAB is fine. We will also continue to piss off the Trustees and use Birmingham when we can.

Haha that’s a good one. Almost as good as the name we adapted for our rivalry with you guys. The “RICE and beans bowl.”

Well, that's why the hyphen is in UNC-C right?
Actually we dropped the hyphen in 1976. My freshman year (77-78) they gave out bumper stickers that said "I lost my hyphen at UNCC". Gotta love college humor.

I remember covering Metro basketball when I worked at the VCU student paper. The UNC Charlotte media guide and gameday notes always included a rather detailed explanation of why we shouldn't use a hyphen for them. As far as I remember, I complied, because you should be allowed to be called whatever you want, but plenty of media outlets still hyphenated (the Associated Press had N.C.-Charlotte as first reference in its stylebook for the longest time).

Heck, let's all change our names. I vote Old Dominion restores our given name, "The Norfolk Division of the College of William & Mary." It just flows off the tongue....

Snappier than "The William Marsh Rice Institute for the Advancement of Letters, Science, and Art".
