Danny Lehmann gets a Promotion
I didn't even realize he was in the Dodgers organization. He's moving from advance video scout to "game planning and communications coach". Dodgers say the position will "combine that game planning and positioning knowledge with more on field and in the dugout responsibilities, including both pre-game and in-game work". He'll be in the dugout, which is great. Congrats Danny, and glad to know you're working for the good guys!

Catchers make great coaches and managers...

It's in my post Dr Evil. Sounds like, at a minimum, he's going to be the guy making sure fielders are in the right spots.

I saw that - just had no idea what that meant.

From your reply, that makes sense. Maybe he works on minor on field adjustments/ player positioning based on hitting tendencies stats?

Right. He's been an advance video scout, so he's already got a foundation of watching other players and tracking their stats. Take that and apply it to in-game positioning adjustments to account for hitter tendencies and pitcher. At least, that's what it sounds like to me.

Yes, congrats!

Does the "game planning and communications coach" wear a uniform, or civilian clothes?

Isn't it typical for all dugout coaches to wear uniforms?

Here are three articles based on today's Dodgers announcement that add a little bit to Brookes Owl's info and subsequent discussion:

1) https://www.truebluela.com/2018/1/4/1685...ny-lehmann

Quote:Major league rules allow for seven coaches in uniform during games through Aug. 31, and the Dodgers have eight coaches. Last year the odd man out during games was Juan Castro, who as quality assurance coach would coach players on the field before the game but during the game would do his work from a stadium suite. It will be interesting to see how that gets handled in 2018.

Castro left in September to become the director of baseball operations of the Tijuana Toros in the Mexican League.

2) https://www.dodgersnation.com/dodgers-an...018/01/04/

Includes tweet from Alanna Rizzo (reporter with the Dodgers' broadcast team on SportsNet LA) listing the Dodgers' coaches ... numbering 10, not 8, coaches:

Quote:Alanna Rizzo
@alannarizzo

#Dodgers coaches:
Roberts Manager
Geren Bench Coach
Honeycutt Pitching Coach
Ward Hitting Coach
Lombard 1B Coach
Woodward 3B Coach
Mark Prior Bullpen Coach
Brant Brown Asst. Hitting Coach
Luis Ortiz Asst. Hitting Coach
Danny Lehmann Communications Coach

1:28 PM - 4 Jan 2018

3) https://dodgers.mlblogs.com/dodgers-anno...92d039697d

A nice Rice mention:

Quote:Lehmann was selected by the Twins in the eighth round of the 2007 draft out of Rice and played in their organization until 2013. After retiring as a player, Lehmann worked on a double major at Rice in sports management and managerial studies until joining the Dodgers prior to the 2015 campaign.

This would have made a good story when the Dodgers were playing the Astros in the World Series last fall. Oh well - now we can publicize it in the 2018 World Series rematch.

RE: Danny Lehmann gets a Promotion
This sounds similar to the path Scott Lonergan took after retiring as a player. I talked with Scott in Arizona several years ago when Rice was playing the Wildcats and he talked about his job as an advance scout for the Padres. Unlike in the days when the advance scout actually saw teams play a series or two in advance, Scott assimilated all the video/stat data MLB provides teams daily. From that he made team and player info for use prior to and during the games. Scott went onto work with Cubs before becoming a players agent. https://sport.rice.edu/news/former-rice-...orts-group

Here is a good article from the NHL that gives a good historical background on the use of video technology by looking back through four of the past and current video specialists for the Blues. Hopefully you will be able to read the whole thing even though it initially was behind a pay wall.
