A&M hires Elko away from Notre Dame
I haven't heard a price but it's official per Kelly, and after offering the L.S.U. D.C. 10 million it's probably substantial.

Early, unconfirmed ND rumor is $ 1.8 million a year, all guaranteed, three year deal.
ND would not match.

A&M seems determined to pay their way into success, time will tell if it works for them

RE: A&M hires Elko away from Notre Dame
As an Irish fan, this is both surprising and disappointing. Elko was a breath of fresh air after VanGorder, and his defenses were aggressive and brought pressure from different positions. A&M got themselves one of the top young DCs today. It is surprising because I had heard that he was making a million per year under his ND contract, so it's not like he was underpaid. If the A&M escalators are to be believed, not to mention length, then it's not a bad move at all for him.
I hope Kelly doesn't reach out to Diaco and decides to go outside his coaching circle again. He really made strong choices in Long/Elko a year ago. I hope he follows a similar strategy and gets a proven coordinator from another solid program.

Elko had verbally agreed to an ND extension, then talked to A&M:
"The most recent rebuffed overture from the Aggies coaxed a new contract from ND for Elko, which he verbally agreed to. One source described the compensation as putting Elko in the top 10 highest paid defensive coordinators in the country and having the highest salary for an assistant in Notre Dame history.
Another put it in excess of $1.5 million a year, which, per USA Today’s data base for assistants’ salaries, would have put him behind only Clemson's Brent Venables ($1.7 million) and the man who flirted with and turned down Texas A&M Wednesday night, LSU’s Dave Aranda".

Elko had verbally agreed to an ND contract extension and said that he would not listen to other offers in recognition of ND stepping up. So when he came back, ND was pissed (rightfully so in my opinion) and told him to pound sand.
Some of the incentives in his A&M contract are unbelievably easy to achieve and the contract ramps up in future years. Elko is going to make more than $2 million a year.
