Jason Smith's stories re Tubby's thousand-yard stare
On the air just now. Jason asked Tubby about recruiting Team Penny and Tubby seemed not to understand. Jason repeated the question. Same blank no response from Tubby. Tubby had no idea what Jason was talking about even though Jason had witnessed them watching the team lots . Esposito then took Tubbys arm and repeated the question in a loud voice saying 'you know, Team Penny.'
Jason said this was a year ago and that he was concerned enough to tell the story to about a dozen people but never, until today, on the air. Jason added that this along with the suspending Rivers in the 2nd half story makes him think that maybe Tubby may have some issues there. Who knows, maybe this has something to do with his missed lunch dates the failure to make local connections. Or, it could mean nothing .

I guess it is possible that is in the early stages of some form of memory loss. But that also seems like something that the AD would be well aware of as well...

RE: Jason Smith's stories re Tubby's thousand-yard stare
The pressure of this venue and his family is not helping the situation.

Escaping from the unpleasantness would be on my mind too.

It seems like a buyout negotiation and a move would be for the good of all.

I just wanna get through the next 16 games without the team imploding or some strange embarrassing situation hitting the fan.

Yep - I would have expected this kind of thing from John Martin (immaturity), but not from Jason. I have no doubt it happened, just doesn't need to be discussed on a talk show. Low class, distasteful, disrespectful, and a bit hateful tbh . . . just didn't think Jason would stoop that low.

If you say John Martin's name three times, he tweets about us talking about him on his low-ratings show.

You'd think protecting his legacy would enter his mind. Why, at his age and after all he's accomplished over his career, would he want to continue taking the grief he's taking right now? And it's gonna get worse as the season progresses.
By most accounts, Tubby is worth $13-15 million dollars. He'll be in the hall of fame. Why not hang it up at the end of the year. His time here will be a footnote as time passes.

RE: Jason Smith's stories re Tubby's thousand-yard stare
But it's perfectly okay for Tubby to accept a 5 year contract when he, his family, and his support system know that he is becoming increasingly mentally incapable of performing daily tasks much less coaching a top program to the tune of $15 million dollars.

Things like this don't suddenly pop up.

They are progressive and require medical and psychological attention.

The idea that Joe grabbed Tubby's arm and reminded him of the biggest name in this city is DAMNING.

This has gotten beyond bizarre.

Just shut the basketball program down.

Good grief.

As much as I would like him gone, I'm not going to try and diagnose his state of mind. But Jason has to get someone to listen to the show.

I posted here earlier this season after 1 of the humiliating losses that the media needs to go after him full throttle. Calkins writing hit pieces, GP blasting him, call him senile, whatever it takes to make him leave. Most of us are already doing our part by staying away from FEF

RE: Jason Smith's stories re Tubby's thousand-yard stare
I remember during the signing period last year, somebody asked Tubby about a couple recruits at some function, specifically how things were going with that kid from Georgia (Rayshawn Hammonds)....Tubby said it's all good, that he was actually waiting to sign with us on his birthday

Most everyone had already penciled him to Georgia, where he indeed signed on his birthday...it's like Tubby was the last to know

I found it very odd at the time

I heard Jason tell Calkins the story. Why shouldn't he tell the story especially when it comes to recruiting which it did? Either Tubby is so disengaged or he just isn't up to the demands of a new job like Memphis.

RE: Jason Smith's stories re Tubby's thousand-yard stare
You can defend Tubby to the end if you want.

I believe Jason's story and all the other ones. The administration created this and they need to fix it. It is either disinterest in his $3,000,000 a year job he accepted (And when you accept a $30,000 a year job you are expected to perform, he should be too) or he is, as everyone eventually does, having difficulty with old age.

I remember Larry's last couple of years. I didn't know what was medically wrong, but it was obvious something was.

If indeed Tubby has a personal/medical issue that keeps him from performing his job, he should take the high road and reach an amicable settlement for all involved and go back home.

Because it's just wrong to imply that the man has dementia, which is exactly what Jason was trying to insinuate. And to do it with two wishy-washy (at best) examples.

Say he can't coach, say he can't recruit, say he can't run the Memphis program, but good grief, don't start throwing out the idea that the man is somehow mentally incapacitated with these two flimsy instances (two instances, years apart might I add, don't make for a pattern). It's a ridiculous stretch, entirely unnecessary, and distasteful.

I am all for Tubby finding his way out the door as our coach but that is trash reporting at its worst...

Agree 100%. Incredibly low ball move. In a situation like this, you either go all in if you have proof that he is suffering from a disorder that affects his ability to do his job OR you say nothing at all. He implied that Tubby may be mentally unfit. Many of of his listeners will run with that.

Tubby had 2 seasons under .500 at Texas Tech, so it's not like finishing around there and hanging it up after this year would tarnish his image. Going out with 1 NCAA appearance in his last 6 seasons and 4 seasons out of 6 under .500 might.

I missed the show today... but now that Jason has made it public... Jason told me this story and some other times he had talked to Tubby that had caused his to be concerned back some time ago. I totally believe it... and Jason held that info close to the vest til now...
