RE: Charlotte AD Judy Rose Announces Retirement
Was a fantastic interview on local sports radio (610 FNZ) this morning with longtime Charlotte Observer staff writer (and occasional provocateur) Tom Sorenson this morning discussing the retirement. They didn't see this coming, so Tom was brought on to give his off the cuff assessment.

Basically he said that though Judy did a lot of good things in her (earlier) tenure, and he especially spent some time on the superb facilities, there just wasn't a commitment to the revenue sports in recent years in his opinion. He went on to say that the Charlotte market is ripe for the taking, and he thinks the program can do it with the right hires and mindset/support from the top. Tom isn't the type to carelessly lavish praise. I think what most impressed him was that like with Football, a lot of people in certain positions tried to tell the fanbase who and what it could be, and we didn't listen. We got football, and now we are moving on from Judy. he loves the self determination and, in his words, what is becoming more obvious / impossible to ignore potential on that campus. What a great day to be a Niner!

Hopefully you get a good one in. It is always a crap shoot on the next hire.

I honestly don’t think we could do worse than the one we had/have.
Between terrible marketing, terrible hires, inept communication, unwillingness to adapt to technology, and general malaise’, she pretty much checked the do not do list of “being a good AD in 2018”.

It might take a few years to see results on the field and court, but this is absolutely a positive step.

Power to the people.

How much is the retirement attributed to the pressure put on Judy from the Niner fans ? 100% ?

So happy for Charlotte. I imagine there is work ahead, but I know the true fans were dying for this. Best of luck and congrats!

Might.....You will need a HC in place before July 1st. Unless you keep Fancher for the 18-19 season as interim. Then comes the question on why he would stay there knowing he is never going to be full time HC.

She was probably going to retire within the next 3 years but we couldn't afford to wait that long. I believe this 100% forced her hand.

Doesn't mean a replacement can't be in place working alongside her until she leaves. She's retiring, not fired, so I doubt this will be a clean out your office and get out scenario. She will likely hold the new hires hand for a bit and get them introduced to the people that matter (and then hopefully they'll expand beyond those people unlike she ever did).

I'm happy for Charlotte today. I don't know much about the athletics department, but from what I've heard here, Rose needed to go. I hope you guys make a great hire, and I hope you can find a way to compete against the Panthers for attention in football.

We don't really compete with the Panthers anymore than we do with the Hornets in basketball. We just need to get our own alumni back on board and we'll be fine. Anything else is gravy.

Agreed. As a headhunter, I think there's a real case to be made for big money college athletic jobs like this to go temp-to-perm. Try before you buy.
