RE: Grade the 2017 Toledo Rockets Football season
If I were grading the performance on conference play alone, then yes A+. They won a MAC Title. A long awaited MAC Title. But the loss, the way they lost in the bowl game showed that the MAC in 2017 was very weak and misleading. It showed the loss to Ohio was not a short week prep fluke. It showed that while good, this team was not great. The loss was also a setback in regards to national perception. Toledo was gaining the identity of a respectable football school in a bad conference. After that loss, Toledo looks merely like the best of worst. A team should be playing its best football by the end of a season (barring big injuries), not looking like a lifeless group of participants, who took a beating. No way that I give this season an A.

Winning a bowl game is like winning a game in the NCAA tournament. The entire nation of sports fans pays attention to bowl games. Most fans nationally do not care who wins the MAC. We had our chance to show the country on ESPN (not ESPN2 or ESPN3) what a quality program we have. That was not accomplished.

Maybe but besides your dedicated fans, does the entire nation of sports fans (or even entire national of football fans) really pay attention to every and all bowl games? Yes for the major bowls with teams with national following, best match ups and the New Years games, but out of all the 30+ bowls, especially one on a Saturday evening Dec 23rd really get much interest? Be interesting to see the actual TV ratings for each bowls. I agree losing so bad in your bowl game looks terrible, but does it really get national attention????

May not be a big deal, but a helluva lot better than losing to them which is the only alternative.

OK I just checked, the TOL APP ST apparently drew 1.7 million viewers (29th out of the 37 bowls). For interesting perspective USF vs Texas Tech at noon that same day had twice as many viewers (3.4m). So looks like the entire nation of sports (or football) fans was not watching, guess having a bowl game on a Saturday night of a holiday (and holiday travel) weekend may have been a blessing after all.

Defensively, yes. I'm not saying air the ball out, but don't give up points. I know most of us don't care what the polls say. I do, and I think recruits do too. We get noticed winning by 40, we don't get noticed winning by 10. I may not like it, but it's the way it is.
