I would still give them an A. They did everything that the fans wanted them to do. I my opinion the lose at OU came after the big win over NIU no questions asked. The bowl game to me was that they played them last year and another trip to Mobile, really didn't excite them very much. That is no excuse but that is my opinion. I'm sure all of the coaches have watched that game over and over to find out where the trobules are.

Troubles galore in every aspect in the final game. I am not buying that they did not want to be there.

Agreed. The need to find and build and O-line was exposed in both games. The need to build a real linebacking corp was exposed in both games. The need to find some leadership and resiliency was exposed. It will probably take about 2 years to build up the O-line and Linebackers. Luckily Toledo plays in the MAC, so they can get 8-9 wins on their skill players alone.

Not a long time ago, we had the largest O line in the country...

That may be part of it. IMO, better recruits often look at which mid-major schools offer the greatest potential for them to play early. That's why I think the current O-line is just kind of okay, but I also think that is why the in-coming class appears to have future all-conference linemen. They see starting potential during their sophomore year. The linebacking department is more of a mystery to me. Is it because Toledo has been so focused on defending the pass that they have not been recruiting run stopping Lbs of late, or have they just had difficulty recruiting linebackers the past few years?

WE WERE 11-3. It's better than most teams in the Country. Grade wise A++ based on being 11-3.

Recruits want to play here. We have the best facilities in The MAC. We have the best overall Mid-Major Football Program in the nation. Our players have the best GPA in the Conference and many graduate early. We have several former players in the NFL including our beloved Kareem Hunt. We could not ask for a better Ambassador than Kareem for our football team. GO CHIEFS AND GO ROCKETS !!!!!

Overall, it was an okay year.

Here are my deductions:
The Tulsa game was UGLY and we were lucky to win.
We played Miami tough for a half. Then we got our butts kicked. We lost by 22, I think people forget that.
We got our butts handed to us in Athens and Mobile. Inexcusable to play the way we did.
We got smoked in the second half of the MACC. If that game is 10 minutes longer, Zippity do dah wins the title.

Let's be real, the MAC is weak this season and we took advantage of it. I don't think this team plays the way they did and wins the west most seasons. Come to think of it, maybe I am teetering back on that B- to C ledge...

Go back and look at the records of the MAC teams the Rockets played in 2004.
Not seeing the connection, or how that makes the 2017 team any better or worse.

2004 MACC
@EMU 4-7 W 42-32
Ball State 2-9 W 42-14
@WMU 1-10 W 59-33
Ohio 4-7 W 31-13
CMU 4-7 W 27-22
@Miami U 8-5 L 16-23
@NIU 9-3 W 31-17
BGSUX 9-3 W 49-41
MACC Miami 8-5 W 35-27

A weak MAC is not an anomaly, Toledo's last MACC in 2004, the Conference was probably even weaker.

In the 2017 MACC, the Rockets were up 38-7 at the end of the 3rd quarter. Then 45-14 with 13 minutes left in the 4th. The game was over. Rockets were out scored in the 4th by 2 TD's. The last Akron score coming with 20 seconds in the game. Not exactly UT being dominated through out the 2nd half. It was 28-0 at half time. So do you do pull a Lane Kiffin at that point and shove opponent's face in the mud, or do you show some sportsmanship and back it down? At 45-14 the game was pretty secure.

RE: Grade the 2017 Toledo Rockets Football season
An A rated team does not get blown out twice in the same season. The loss to Miami is nothing to be upset about. But losing two games because we could not stop a run game that we knew was coming is sad. Also, showing no real big play ability in a bowl game with plenty of time to prepare is not acceptable.

B- is the grade based on winning the MAC but no A grade when Toledo was unprepared and uninspired for two key games.

So the 10-2 2015 Rocket FB team has to be a "C" since it lost in the Glass Bowl to a 8-6 NIU, 8-5 WMU and did not win a MACC? If the Bowl win gives them a higher grade than "C" then you're implying the Bowl is more important than the MACC.

Successful season by importance:
1) Winning record
2) Beat BGSUX
3) MACC
4) Bowl Win
5) Significant OCC win(s)

I would adjust this to look like this:

1) MACC
2) Beat BG
3) Winning record
4) National ranking in top 25
5) Significant OCC wins
6) Bowl win
Winning record. At first I blew this off since it would occur if you got the others, but in terms of significance, I'll take an MACC even if we have an overall losing record - which would mean losing all 4 OCC games and having a lot of help within the MAC. I think it is certain if we were to have a winning record, but lose to BG - it would not be successful. Beating BG and having a losing record overall would be more palatable. A bowl win is nice - but a loss in a bowl game to what I still consider an inferior opponent - for sure last year - is not acceptable, but relatively meaningless other than potentially for recruiting. That stinker this year will probably hurt recruiting in Alabama and Florida. Or, it could help if we are recruiting for certain positions where players know they could make an immediate impact. 6 of one, half-dozen of the other...

I like your list, and I know the bowl was a terrible performance but somewhat surprised the some fans downgrade the entire season due to that outcome. I also agree that a MACC is always the #1 goal, that is why they play on a conference and the aim is to win. And I may have been more critical of my season grading if it had not been for the first MACC since 2004. If that was not the case perhaps expectations for better bowl and higher ranking beyond use the MACC would have been there. And I pay little attention to how the MACC was won as at the end history only remembers the achievement not the path, many seasons have been sunk by bad timing of losses, questionable call (by team or officials), poor preparation and yes sometimes just plain bad luck. When all goes right and you win and complete the season with the MACC that should be a appreciated outcome regardless of the context.

RE: Grade the 2017 Toledo Rockets Football season
I went with an A-. The MACC was the biggest determining factor. The low points were the 2nd half against Miami, Ohio U and the bowl game loss. I figure Miami just had the better talent and we knew the humidity was going to be a big factor on a team that is not as deep as Miami. Didn't like it, but was ecstatic with the 16-10 halftime lead and only down 38-30 early in 4th Qtr. We could score on them, we couldn't stop them. Ohio U - that game was almost expected. We had too many games crammed into too short of a period of time. The big win over NIU in the week (or 6 days) prior to traveling to OU likely was a part of the let-down. It did expose our weaknesses in the trenches - on both sides of the ball. But then again, I look at the OSU team that dismantled USC with it's defense, but gave up 55 to Iowa?? Those things seem to happen at least once a year. I forgave that because it did not affect the opportunity to win the MACC. Wanted the rematch to be in Ford Field. MACC game was a blow-out. The bowl game is what almost took me down to a B+. It ruined what could have an A season - but I do think the MACC win, followed by a week for exams, then practice before departing for Mobile played a big factor in the lousy performance. I have to stop or I will vote again and take it down a notch or two....

Beating BG is not a big deal when BG continues to suck.

Winning a bowl game is like winning a game in the NCAA tournament. The entire nation of sports fans pays attention to bowl games. Most fans nationally do not care who wins the MAC. We had our chance to show the country on ESPN (not ESPN2 or ESPN3) what a quality program we have. That was not accomplished.
