NIU FB 2017 defense
how do you measure the effectiveness of the NIU defense for the 2017 season?

Is it points surrendered average per game?
What is considered a good number of points to limit opposition per your season avg?

Is it yards and first downs surrendered per game?

How does NIU season stats stack up against ncaa averages for all D1 teams?

avg yards gained per play passing /running by opposition?

penalty yards surrendered?

where mostly does NIU need to improve in 2018 on D?

I’m a fan of simplicity and “scoreboard!”:

Points allowed - points against off turnovers + points for off takeaways

^ Just keep that number low. Don’t care how.

RE: NIU FB 2017 defense
thanx.

lots and lots of data to drill down and digest

what stood out the most among all the data

NIU rankings nationally and in MAC

rush d - #16 nationally 2nd in MAC
total d - #26 nationally 1st in MAC

score D - #32 nationally first in MAC

passes INT - #23 nationally /3rd in MAC

* D yards yielded per completion - #107 nationally/11th in MAC

* last stat suggests NIU victim of big pass plays too often .
Often seemed to me when we had opponents third and long they found middle of field open for first down plays and then some. How many pass plays by opponents went for more than twenty yards?

Analysis of data collected over time serves a useful purpose. Right now I'm too weak kneed to noodle thru offensive data for NIU 2017 season --given facing the prospects of L&R knee replacements in the months ahead and fearing some unfavorable offensive stats.
Maybe another fan can pick up and run with the football.

I think maybe the number of 3 and outs or something similar should be included since it results in better field position for the offense, usually.

I think the Huskie defense that started the season was much better than the defense that finished the season. Too many injuries. I hope that Pugh and Corcoran can stay healthy next year, and I hope some of these new prospects can live up to the hype.

Offense wins championships in the MAC. We had an inefficient offense and as a result we were maybe the 4th best team in the MAC with Toledo, CMU, and Ohio better teams. Defense can only get you so far, if you can't score points you're not winning games.

EMU is the poster boy. They lost 6 games by a total of 23 point. 3 games were lost in OT.

The defense did appear to slow down at the end. It's so key to keep your top players healthy because "next man up" is tough for G5's. Quality depth will always be an issue here. I think Pugh was the second best defender behind Smith for those first 4 games. And Corcoran, though a little disappointing IMO, was the only other D-end who could get pressure regularly.
