RE: MBB: Toledo at Buffalo game thread
Didn''t see the game, but read through about half of the thread. Seems like it is the same issues - poor fundamentals. Poor defense - giving up 104 points, too many turnovers, and can't shoot free throws with any consistency. When the team crawls back into a game, they can't get stops on defense - then turn it over on offense. I guess 16 turnovers is not that bad when you consider the number of possessions in a 104-94 game. But Buffalo only turned it over 6 times in the same game. Maybe we could recruit their coach.

Number of turnovers wasn’t the issue so much as an inability to force TOS. UB had at least seven steals and we had, I think, 2or3. Inability to stay in front of a dribbler or provide help defense on drives should be correctable but hasn’t been. Plus, there had to be twenty UB shots that hung on the rim andvtwenty of them rolled the wrong way. Good shots, bad shots, guarded shots, forced shots- hang on the rim, then drop in.

We also didn't seem to have an answer for Perkins in the lane. But that's a problem most of the MAC will have, as well--he is a beast. We tried to deny the entry pass into Perkins from behind, and that ended up in fouls on Adway & Knapke...try to front him, and he just got the lobs. Double-team him, front & back, and Buffalo makes you pay with a 3. Just not a great matchup for us. Friday against Akron will be a fair test of where we are at the moment. Should be a winnable game.

He was part of what I said about shots: he banked in a ten foot hook shot between a Knapke/ Navigato double team.

From what I have seen this season, the Rockets will be lucky to finish in the middle of the MAC West. Finishing below .500 seems like a solid possibility.

Aren't steals considered part of the turnover numbers?

Yes. I guess what I’m saying is that other teams would have more turnovers if we had the mindset or quickness to force them. Lots of teams win games with 16 turnovers but if you can’t force TOs by the other team they get more productive possessions than you because you’re relying on them making unforced errors. We don’t have a Lauf drawing a couple charges a game, either.

I think the big issue with the turnovers is that they are not aggressive turnovers. They’re lazy ones that lead to easy baskets on the other end. Simply taking a shot clock violation would be more productive.
