Disa & Data for Week of 1/2/18
Some Conference Notes and Tribe Disa & Data
JMU thoughts/info is in the Game Thread

PLAYERS OF THE WEEK:

Nathan Knight • William & Mary
So., F, 6-10, 235 - Syracuse, N.Y./Nottingham
Knight recorded his fourth double-double with a career-high tying 31 points, 11 rebounds and a career-best 8 blocked shots as William & Mary edged Hofstra, 90-87, in its CAA opener. It was the third 30-point effort of the year for Knight, who was 13-of-21 from the floor and tallied double digits for the 13th straight game. The 8 blocks, including one that sealed the win with 3 seconds left, were the most in the CAA this season.

Vasa Pusica • Northeastern
Jr., G, 6-5, 210 - Belgrade, Serbia/Sunrise Christian Acad.
Pusica poured in a career-high 31 points and added five rebounds and four assists as Northeastern opened CAA play with an 81-70 victory at James Madison. The junior point guard had his ninth straight game tallying double figures.

ROOKIE OF THE WEEK:

Ryan Allen • Delaware
Fr., G, 6-2, 195 - Bowie, Md./DeMatha Catholic
Allen averaged 19.0 ppg in Delaware’s 2-0 week. The freshman guard was the Blue Hens’ top scorer in both games, tallying a season-high 24 points in a 97-96 overtime win over Cornell and 14 points in a 58-56 triumph at UNCW.

CONFERENCE NOTES:

CAA OPENING DAY: Last Saturday’s opening day of CAA play provided plenty of excitement and exceptional performances. Jarrell Brantley scored a season-best 24 points to lead Charleston past Towson, 73- 62, in a battle of the teams picked to finish first and second in the CAA preseason poll. Dainan Swoope (21 points) led six Elon players in double digits as the Phoenix topped Drexel, 90-75. Northeastern got career-best scoring outings from Vasa Pusica (31 points) and Shawn Occeus (21 points) and won 81-70 at James Madison. Delaware used a late run to earn a 58-56 road victory at UNCW.
The Tribe rallied past Hofstra, 90-87, as Connor Burchfield drained two threes in the final 30 seconds. Nathan Knight (31 points) and David Cohn (26 points), and the Pride’s Justin Wright-Foreman (36 points) all had career-best scoring efforts.

RPI TOP 100: Three CAA teams are ranked in the Top 81 of the latest NCAA RPI through games of Dec. 31. William & Mary leads the way at #63, Towson follows at #65 and Elon is ranked #81. The CAA is one of only 11 conferences (American, ACC, Big East, Big Ten, Big 12, Missouri Valley, Mountain West, Pac 12, SEC and WCC) with three teams ranked in top 81. The CAA is ranked 13th out of the nation’s 32 Division I conferences, one up from last week.

NON-CONFERENCE PLAY: CAA teams finished with a 68-56 record against non-conference teams in regular-season play. Seven of the league’s 10 teams had winning records in non-conference action.

HOME COURT ADVANTAGE: CAA teams are a combined 42-10 at home this season and also have 12 victories on neutral courts. Five of the league’s 10 teams (Charleston, Elon, Northeastern, Towson and William & Mary) are unbeaten on their home floors this season.

CAA GAME OF THE WEEK ON COLLEGE SPORTS LIVE: The CAA is teaming with CBS Sports Digital for a 12-game “CAA Game of the Week” on CollegeSportsLive.com. All 10 teams will appear at least two times as part of the broadcast package. Jeff McCarragher will provide play-by-play of the games and former coach Mack McCarthy will be the analyst.
The Tribe's visit to James Madison is the opening game of the package on Jan. 2 and will be followed by Elon at Northeastern on Friday and JMU at Northeastern on Sunday.

TRIBE Disa & Data:

Nathan Knight posted his 4th double-double with a career-high tying 31 points, 11 rebounds and a career-best 8 blocks vs Hofstra. He’s among Top 6 in the CAA in scoring, rebounding, FG% and blocks.

David Cohn had a career-high tying 26 points, 7 assists and 3 steals. He leads the CAA with 7.2 apg and moved into 2nd place on W&M’s career assists list (369). He has 86 total assists on the season.

Connor Burchfield is tops the CAA in 3’s per game (3.4) and 3-pt FG% (56.9%). He shoots 75% from the FT line...and is 5th among the five W&M starters in free throw percentage!

Matt Milon added 11 points vs. HU. He’s 2nd in the CAA in 3’s per game (3.1) and 3-point FG% (54.4%). He is averaging 14.3 ppg.

Justin Pierce filled the stat sheet with 9 points, 8 rebounds, 2 blocks and 2 steals. He already has crossed the 100 rebound mark and leads the team at 9.1 per game.

• The Tribe averages 12 more points, per game, than their opponents from behind the 3 point line.

Go Tribe!

Disa & Data for Week of 1/2/18
Thanks for the great info, Billymac.

Who could ever forget that 2002 Tribe win against VCU at the Hall when VCU players turned into total thugs late in the second half, with Mack McCarthy having absolutely no control of his team and two VCU players ejected. Demise of McCarthy's stint at VCU.

And the VCU player punting/kicking the ball into the stands during the game ... I was sitting 10 feet away from McCarthy that game and it was one of the most entertaining games I’ve ever witnessed.

Wasn't sure of the best thread for this, but W&M is 11-0 when they've scored more than 75 points. 0-4 at 75 and under.

Did Milon have a player of the week? Or was it just a CAA player of the night?

With the early success, it's key for this team to stay grounded and focused on getting better as a group, in particular the bench play. The starting five, also, can't lose sight of what got them to this point - sharing the ball.

The CAA gives Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week, but not Player of the Night.

I remember it being some fan voting thing. Nothing official, but I remember the CAA announcing it over Twitter.

Yes, it's a CAA Twitter poll. I vote early and often
