Well, then it is a very bad PR strategy. It’s only going to result in them being ridiculed, it’s not going to result in substantive change.

The early results are encouraging--they're not getting any more ridicule for their National Championship claim than they would for claiming they belonged in the playoff (Bowlsby, Feinbaum, etc).

There isn't going to be any substantive change until 2025 or so anyway. If UCF treats this year as just another lower-FBS team running the table like UTah or Boise STate or Tulane, then by 2025 nobody outside Orlando will remember or care about UCF's 2017 season. Now, discussion of playoff expansion will include "UCF's 2017 National Championship claim."

(It's also a talking point for recruits for the next 20 years or so for UCF. UCF now has Tradition with a capital T. Notre Dame has Touchdown Jesus, Ole Miss has cowbells, VAnderbilt has "Anchor Down", UCF has a national championship banner and a chip on their shoulder about you not respecting it.)

100% spot on. This whole National Championship thing is marketing. It's not really that they expect it to be a realistic national championship, but they are gonna use the press from it. I'll tell you one thing, after this week, nobody is gonna confuse UCF with USF lol.

Reminds of when UNC claimed they were coastal division champs and bought the team rings. However, they were ineligible due to probation from the Butch Davis era and Georgia Tech played in the ACC Championship game. Record books so no such title and it got roundly mocked in the media and internet.

They beat the team that beat the 2 teams playing for the national title. No one can say for certain that UCF couldn't beat UGA or Alabama in a one off. Got no problem with them claiming a national championship since no one beat them

My biggest problem with this is giving out rings for being ACC Coastal Division Champions, not for doing it while on probation so you weren't recognized as champions.

Didnt Auburn hand out National Championship rings in 2004 when they went undefeated and were not chosen for the BCS NCG?

Undefeated really has nothing to do with it, as being undefeated is never a requirement for being a champion in any sport i can think of.

USF has just as much basis as UCF to print up national championship banners and rings, we can say that at 10-2, we should have qualified for an expanded playoff, and nobody can say for sure we wouldn't have won it if we did. It's no more silly than UCF's claim.

Bottom line is that the Alabama - Georgia winner is going to be the official national champion of all of the conferences that are contractual members of the CFP, and that includes the AAC, and therefore, UCF.

No argument with handing out rings for National Championships, conference titles, bowl wins even. But Division Titles? Feh.

You are full of AAC passion and vim and vigor right now, and it is clouding your judgment. There's no logical way to argue that because UCF beat 3-loss, #7 Auburn that makes them National Champions. 07-coffee3

"Undefeated with a bowl win over a top 10 team." NAtional championships have been claimed with less justification than that.

Anyone can claim anything they want. It's up to us to point out when it makes no sense. 07-coffee3

What makes no sense is the logic by which the committee determines who should be in the playoff...it's getting stupid. No other sport has this kind of retardedness deciding a champion

It's pretty obvious they need to move to 8 teams. Ditch the Wizard of Oz-Men behind the curtain Committee as well

You realize that if we had an 8-team playoff, we'd still have a committee determining who will fill at least some playoff spots. Heck, the NCAA tournament fills more than half its slots with a committee.

You do realize a committee fills 100% of the slots in the CFP right now? No other major sport does that (or ever has). In the most popular proposed 8-team format--the committee would directly fill only 2 slots and would pick 1 from a narrowly pre-defined field of 5 G5 champs. The less subjectivity and power given to the ice skating judges---the better in my humble opinion. Thats not just good for the G5--or the Big12--or the Pac-12---thats best for the long term health and welfare of the sport.

As for championships---virtually all championships in the top level of college football mythical. The CFP is mythical as it is based nothing more than the opinions of about a dozen ice skating judges. Multiple conferences commissioners and coaches have called the committee's choices into question. Every media outlet has questioned it rankings. In reality, the CFP is little more than an invitational tournament that functions as the closest thing to a championship that we could get everyone to sign. The truth is, at least half the conferences basically agreed to it under duress. Those 5 conferences had virtually no input into the system (both in its design--and certainly not in its implementation) and had little choice but to sign it. Of the P5, some wanted 8 from the beggining--so the CFP{ does not really represent all their desires either. In some ways the CFP is better than the BCS. In some ways its worse (as in much worse). Either way---it's clearly a terribly flawed system that will be lucky to last the full 12 years without major change.

Though those in charge will indignantly howl that there is ZERO interest in change--my guess is change is already being contemplated. lol....By the way, today the State of Florida officially recognized the UCF national championship. Its now "officially" a split championship.

Sorry, but the State of Florida has no power to declare anything related to national college football. They can declare UCF to be the State Champs of Florida, I guess, but that's it. No split champions, UCF finished #6, it's just the way it is.

Exactly. There are plenty of cupcakes out there that the better G5 teams can schedule. And they can do it because poll voters will always value being undefeated, no matter how weak the schedule.
