I think the underlying statement is we don't trust this staff on evaluating and developing talent

Well then put Bill Belichick in the same group as Rod Carey...after all,l Bill sat Tom Brady and only played him because of injury to Drew Bledsoe

NIU fans have to realize that the program is not a failure if you don't make a G5 bowl each year.........If Carey starts having consecutive losing seasons, then I am in the camp of let him go..............

And of course “we” have such vast experience and knowledge in developing and evaluating talent. Years of year round coaching experience with thousands of practices and hundreds of games by 9-10 D1 coaches pales in comparison to all the games watched by dozens of computer board experts.

Nobody thinks we can make big bowl each year but get a couple breaks and maybe get in like twice in 4 years. Spark the fan base and generate more money.

Ok the bill belichik comparison with Tom Brady, come on. You guys always find the one comparison. How about his hundreds of great evaluations in the draft and depth chart.

I'm not saying we know better but we can have the opinion that we don't trust all their evaluations. I would feel better with another vast experienced staff making those calls.

I think program success varies within the fanbase. I personally dont care about the MACC unless it means we are in the access bowl conversation. I care more about boneyard P5 victories or wins over ranked opponents in OOC and bowls. MAC wins and MAC cups do nothing in terms of perception nationally or excite our alum base that are disengaged. Wins over NW or Iowa or Nebraska do.

The good recruiting class is one thing to consider, but a good culture?

He has to quit being stubborn and be open to changing the offensive and defensive schemes to fit the top players he has. Also, winning the turnover battle is an important part of the game, but holding back your offense just to avoid turnovers does not win the games against the good teams. Multiple 3 and outs are almost as bad as a turnover and tire the defense out by the 2nd half.

8-5 is a good year, but I think we could have had a very good to great year with the right personnel playing and a more diverse offense.

I agree 100% personnel and offense. He chose to have a offense with a low ceiling when he benched Santa. I was more talking about the culture of NIU with the players and coaches who have gone elsewhere and come back. You want some continuity to that winning culture. Guys like Kane are good coaches.

Resign him and keep deteriorating. Look at his last 2 years. We've beat nobody good. Nebraska was cool but they were 4-8, bad. We barely beat them too. Took2 fluke pick sixes.

I never used the punt actually but yes that was a terrible coaching decision you're right.

This is new material. I never brought up the weak Nebraska win.

Since I had not seen it mentioned here, there is a poll on Hustle Belt for the 2017 season. Right now it is neck and neck between B and C.

I’m not sure you can use the word “great” to describe his recruiting. Good maybe. But it’s not like we have had a class that is considered the best in the Mac. Being ranked in the top quarter of the Mac in recruiting really is not a flag of greatness

RE: Extension or No extension ? Poll
In the end when you evaluate a coach isnt it about wins and losses?
Conference performance with your peers??? Who have the same resources you do??

NIU has been in the mix for a west title or won the mac west title in all of Rod's years...and have beaten P5 schools with at leat 5 x times the salaries and resources that NIU has...and the nation wide respect other coaches have said about NIU being one of the "best" mid majors....listen to the ESPN announcer for the NIU-Ohio state game......nothing but praise..with NIU being in the game with 2 minutes left....

but oh, he has made ridiculous coaching decisions, ridiculous judgement of talent, offended the media, lost 5 bowl games, beaten bad p5 teams... blah blah blah....

I once had a grad student in 1998 who graduated from Notre Dame. He told me that "he didnt even know NIU had a football team"......that is how bad it was in 1998.........you need perspective on all of this and look at the overall picture

C'mon. I am sure most Notre Dame fans STILL don't know we are Division 1.

Yeah winning MAC is not even factor let alone MAC west. West is like big ten east, whoever wins, wins championship doubt he'll play a majority of the more talented underclassmen to make a difference.

I think that's G5 advantage. You can play right away

Yes, those mistakes were crucial, however we were moving the ball up and down the field. What Coach Carey fails to realize is our defense, as good as it is, will wear down when they are consistently on the field because our offense can't sustain drives. We saw that happen this season.

You mean a rush up the middle for 2, a sneak up the middle for 1, and a incomplete pass isnt a time drainer?

This is such a silly post, Triple J. Both Favre and Brady were just starting their second season in the NFL. Brady was playing behind a pro bowl quarterback in Bledsoe, and Majikowski was a decent NFL QB, although by no means spectacular.

More importantly, there is a very large learning curve between collegiate and NFL football. Although we see if far more now, in the Brady and Favre era, young quarterbacks rarely were handed starting jobs.

Favre and Brady's insertion into the starting lineup was accelerated by injuries to the QB's playing ahead of them, however it's comical to imply that was the only reason they got their chance to play. They both would have found the field eventually.

You sure about that sustained drives? NIU wasnt in t top 50 of FBS for time of possession or 3rd conversion rate.
