I don't care what the Eastern teams do, but it is time for the Western based teams to form a more regional conference. If some of the teams would rather be in an Eastern conference like UAB or USA, so be it. IMO, these would be the 10 core members. Other teams can be added.

RE: New Conference
I am curious how budgets are going to start looking going forward.
Despite the constant yammering about TV, that's not a huge revenue source for most schools, especially if you view it as a percentage of the budget.

With growing distaste for athletic fees you have to think most schools are charging close to the maximum they can without major blowback or transferring from auxiliary enterprises as much as they can.

We seem to be in a sideways trend on enrollment and if the economy continues to see declining unemployment we may start seeing enrollment dips.

Selling tickets seems to be more of a challenge in the business of athletics college and pro.

The new tax code now means that required donations to purchase seats are no longer deductible so may be harder to get buy in for.

The overall trend to me looks like tighter operating budgets in athletics.

If there is no TV money, i see zero reason to stretch that far west. The bold teams are your core. You'd be far better off taking WKU, MTSU, or a couple of Alabama schools to finish off the conference. WKU, MTSA, and UAB are probably the best all around adds (get some decent football and bsketball). A couple of Alabama schools like UAB and maybe Troy keeps the footprint tighter.

Probably. In an environment where increasing revenue is difficult, the only other option to balance the budget is decreasing expenses. Additionally, with TV off the table as a major revenue source, increasing ticket sales and 'in stadium" revenue then becomes the primary path to increased revenue. Both of these shifts would certain be a precursor to smaller G5 conferences with tight footprints that minimize travel expenses and attract additional ticket buyers from nearby traveling fan bses (as well as alums from the visiting school that now live in the area).

For schools in larger cities (say Houston)--it could help. Even in a city of 6 million, there are not many grads from places like UConn or ECU in Houston--its just too far away. But there are likely a crap load of alums from Texas St, UTSA, N Texas, and LaTech who found jobs in Houston. Heck, though S Miss farther away the other nearby schools I mentioned---there are probably even more S Miss grads in Houston than UConn grads. So, when those closer teams come to town--you're likely to do a bit more walk up ticket business than you would playing teams that are 1000 miles away--even if those teams don't traditionally "travel well". Those nearby school fans wouldn't really be traveling--its just some of thier fans already live in Houston. That said, Im guessing the ticket sale bump seen by playing in tighter league would probably be more significant in big city schools and less profound for schools that are located in small towns or rural areas as they simply have fewer grads from other schools living conveniently near the stadium.

Traveling pairs are one of the best ways to cut costs(and increase local rivalries, visiting fans).Choose the two closest schools-the closer the better--one road trip for two games.I know everyone already knows this--but it is not always done.

This is not an exhaustive list.

UTEP/NMSU

MARSHALL/APP STATE

WKU/MT (C-USA is currently using WKU/MARSHALL)

These are three currently NOT being used.

Sometimes pride and stubbornness defy economy and logic to their own demise.

This was part my thought when I put together this line up. 2/3 of the programs in this line up have significant populations of alums in large cities where other programs are located.

Rice 6,490,000
SMU 7,233,000
Houston 6,490,000
North Texas 7,233,000
UTSA 1,492,000
Memphis 646,000
LA Tech 21,800
Southern Miss 47,000
Arkansas State 71,500

Also, the proximity is really good too. The longest trip would be about 700 miles between Memphis and San Antonio. All other trips would be closer. In many cases much closer.

Again, if the bottom falls out on everyone's media dollars, this line up would make for a quality conferences on the field and in the stands.

RE: New Conference
Stadium should go all in, if they're going to try and be a player.

They should buy the rights to the Sun Belt, CUSA, BigSky, and continue their partnership with MWC for some online streaming games.

With those leagues being spread across the country Stadium could time games on OTA for Friday night for a 7pm ET and a 8pm PT and all day Saturday.

That could work out to 72 Football games and untold number of basketball games.

Make the schools provide the video broadcast. Do the play by play and commentary from a centralized studio that could host the halftime shows. Pay the FBS schools 250k each and FCS teams 1/3 that and you'd still be under $10 million for almost constant programming.

RE: New Conference
I decided to have some fun with this.

I think a more plausible scenario is C-USA East splits away from C-USA West and starts a new conference. Most rivalries stay intact and it isn't reliant upon the Sun Belt to cooperate in realigning. You add James Madison & Delaware as full members and Towson as non-football, all from CAA, as well as Army for football. Sorry to UMass & Liberty. I don't see UMass leaving A10 (e.g. MAC), and thus subsequently not receiving an invite, as well as the recent denials for Liberty say they wouldn't either. Traveling partners would be Towson/Delaware, James Madison/Old Dominion, Charlotte/Marshall, Western Kentucky/Middle Tennessee, & Florida Atlantic/FIU. While Florida Atlantic/FIU are clearly outliers, I think it benefits the conference to have a footprint in the state for recruitment purposes.

Atlantic East Conference:
Code:
East                            West
Army (football only)            Marshall
Delaware                        Western Kentucky
James Madison                   Middle Tennessee
Old Dominion                    Florida Atlantic
Charlotte                       FIU

Towson (non-football)

That leaves C-USA West to pick up newly independent New Mexico State as a full member, as well as Jacksonville State from Ohio Valley & Sam Houston State from Southland. Traveling partners would be Jacksonville State/UAB, Southern Miss/Louisiana Tech, North Texas/Sam Houston State, Rice/UTSA, & UTEP/New Mexico State. I think this conference remains as Conference USA as its headquarters are currently located in Irving, TX. This conference obviously has a strong foothold in the state of Texas for recruitment purposes.

Conference USA:
Code:
East                            West
Jacksonville State              Sam Houston State (w/ stadium upgrade)
UAB                             Rice
Southern Miss                   UTSA
Louisiana Tech                  UTEP
North Texas                     New Mexico State

While the Sun Belt has become more regionalized with the loss of New Mexico State & Idaho, I do see them open to the possibility of adding two new members. The addition of Chattanooga and Eastern Kentucky would expand their footprint into those states, while still keeping the conference regionalized.

Sun Belt Conference additions:
Code:
East
Chattanooga
Eastern Kentucky

(Troy moves to West division.)

Why would CUSA take Jacksonville State an FCS when they could get Troy or USA? Why would they take Sam Houston when Texas State is already FBS and Louisiana Lafayette is right in the neighborhood and FBS?

As I stated, this scenario isn't reliant upon the Sun Belt to cooperate in realigning. Who says that members of the Sun Belt would want to leave the conference or that members of C-USA would want them to join? For example, I don't see Troy looking to leave the Sun Belt any time soon nor for Louisiana-Lafayette to get an invite from Louisiana Tech. This is the same logic I used for adding Chattanooga & Eastern Kentucky to the Sun Belt rather than the new Atlantic East Conference. And, who doesn't want a strong FCS program? Both Appalachian State & Georgia Southern have proven that in the Sun Belt as conference champions. Because a program has been FBS longer doesn't necessarily mean they're better suited over an FCS. Both Jacksonville State & Sam Houston State are strong FCS programs with mass appeal who are capable of making that jump to FBS. In my opinion, this is more plausible than a C-USA/Sun Belt realignment.
