Bowl Payout
Does anyone know if NIU received the typical bowl payout and did they make money based off how close and potentially inexpensive this trip was? With how bad the state of Illinois has been in, NIU could use whatever they can get. My guess is STF reallyyy wanted this bowl due to the cost savings.

RE: Bowl Payout
Doesn't all of the bowl money go to the MAC for redistribution throughout the conference?

I hope it's not an equal distribution. I would certainly hope that NIU would get a much bigger distribution than say Ball State.

At a minimum I hope that the school's expenses are covered before the revenue sharing kicks in. I know the MAC did that for NIU with the Orange Bowl.

RE: Bowl Payout
C'mon guys, nobody except the the very top P5 programs make money from a bowl appearance.
It's been documented that with a few exceptions, almost every school loses money. The only people truly making money is the bowl committee provided they have enough corporate sponsors.
For as much as everyone (myself included) is sick of the MAC's current administration, the help we got under the Orange Bowl scenario was an exception. Conferences typically take the bowl money and there is a formula where the league office gets two slices, the actual bowl participant school gets two slices, and everyone else gets a single slice; so it's essentially cutting up a pie into like 15 or 16 slices.

RE: Bowl Payout
With being able to bus to Detroit and a small payout, my guess is we broke even or came out a little ahead.

The MAC schools that don't make a bowl should get like half of what the bowl teams get.

Small payout ?? I was told this was a 1,900,000 payout ! The kids got three times the gear as the poinsettia bowl . I was told we turned down a couple warm weather destinations because the payout to Detroit was so much more ????

Unless something changed from previous bowl years, secondary tie-ins get less payout than if it was a Big ten team.

Is this what does happen or what you feel should happen? I really do not know and would be interested in what really does happen in this situation.

RE: Bowl Payout
From this article:
https://www.athensnews.com/news/sports/m...924a2.html

“There is a lot of incorrect information regarding bowl payouts,” Mather wrote in an email Tuesday. “We at the MAC provide each of our teams going to bowls a bowl reimbursement and tickets to offset the expense of playing in a bowl game. There is no specific ticket requirement to purchase for any institution to any of our bowls. Tickets are provided so each program can sell tickets and use the funds to cover expenses related to the bowl game.

“In addition,” Mather continued, “at the end of the football season, we as a Conference office provide equally to our membership a football distribution related to our ‘College Football Playoff’ agreement.”

So it seems the MAC reimburses all (or most) of the cost to the schools that played in bowls and then takes whatever it has left over from its bowl payout bucket and splits it equally among all the MAC schools.

My understanding is that we didn't have a choice where we went and the MAC decided the bowl placement. I would have thought the same thing as Randy though and that we picked this bowl because of proximity and match up. Can anyone clear this up because I really don't think we had a choice.

1) Schools do not get to chose what bowl they want. The bowls/conferences decide. If you turn down a bid, you're almost guaranteed to be sitting at home (see: LaTech a few years ago)
2) The school does not receive the bowl payout. The conference does.

See: Should. That means it's my opinion.

True. One other group makes money off of bowl games. The ADs and coaches whose contracts specify a bonus for making a bowl game.

An expense that is rarely mentioned is the cost of housing and feeding the football team from the end of the semester until the bowl game is played. That's why athletic departments prefer to play bowl games as early as possible in the bowl "season," all other things being equal.

NIU almost certainly lost money on the Quick Lane Bowl.

Nothing is every easy or simple to compute payouts and any "profits" after expenses.

Ask a wise accountant: " how much is 2+2?"

A good accountant will ask: "What do you want it to be?"
