So...this is Huskie football
** Finally, we now have the bowl game loss that even the Carey apologists can't defend. Once again, we were thoroughly outperformed, outcoached, and embarrassed on national television. This time, though, the team we played was a 6-6 team that no one thought was going to make us look like a high school junior varsity squad
** In the glorious history of inexplicable in game decisions Coach Carey has made, the fake punt has to be the crown jewel. I didn't think he could top the 73 yard field goal attempt in the MACC against Bowling Green or the punt from the WMU 32 yard line on 4th and one, but alas...
** I am curious how the Carey supporters are going to spin another lost season. The annual excuses are wearing thin. We didn't play a bowl opponent that was "way too good", we didn't start our sixth string QB, we weren't unmotivated because we missed out on an access bowl, etc.
** Of course, there is the "well, we are NIU and just winning eight games is good enough" excuse. If you want to drive me bananas as a former Huskie, just say that. Who accepts mediocrity or slightly above as a ceiling for achievement?
** It now seems like a lifetime ago that we were in the Orange Bowl; an exciting team with a dynamic offense. The future was bright and possibilities seemed limitless. How have we wound up at this point? We have the most unimaginative, ill-conceived offense in collegiate football. We are so anemic that we don't even try to score at the end of first halves. I have never seen a football team do that at ANY level. It is mind boggling
** The buyout would only be one season now. Please, NIU, we need a coaching change. We need to re-invigorate this program. We need new leadership, new energy, and new direction. Next season is going to be a lost season under Coach Carey - the schedule is way too ambitious. We need a professional coach
** Coach Carey will never land another head coaching job in collegiate football. I think he will do just fine as a position coach and have gainful employment for as long as he wishes to remain in football
** One team was grateful for the opportunity to play in the Quick Lane Bowl, one expressed dissatisfaction. For those who stated it didn't matter - still think that?
** I don't hate the MAC - I know many NIU fans do, however. I would like to point out that there is no alternative to the MAC. What conference is NIU going to go to? The bigger conferences are not interested in NIU any longer and the Sun Belt and C-USA are no better and logistically impractical. For better or worse, NIU is where it belongs - unless you want to go independent again

Anyone think Carey’s contract was already extended and we just don’t know?

I'm not saying to fire him because of the finances in the Ath dept, but how do you figure it does nothing?

Brutal game. Out with friends watching this at a bar in St. Charles and a fair amount of people cheering for NIU. Can’t even count how many times I heard the equivalent of “Is Carey an idiot “. How can someone be that stupid with decision making. It’s like he had money on the game. Literally the only way someone can defend the absolutely horrendous decisions. Fire Carey!!!

Some very solid points here. Based on the scores of common opponents, Duke, Army and San Diego St. are very similar teams. Given this to be accurate, this Huskie team showed little improvement throughout the season. One of the biggest measurements for the effectiveness of a Coach is how a team improves throughout the season, and we simply did not make true progress.

I bet Barsema, Frazier, Yordon, and Chessick were thinking the same thing. Disgraceful.

RE: So...this is Huskie football
As far as removing Carey, NIU has a temporary university president at the helm and the search for a new president will go well into 2018 or even beyond. I wonder if the temp president just simply doesn't want to deal with approving a buyout signoff (I assume the president would need to approve). I gotta think the churn at the top hurts any such move.
We'll need a bigger fiasco than another poor bowl game (a 8-5 season doesn't sound too bad if your the president of NIU and have other more pressing issues).
Depressing to watch, sure...but nothing will happen on coaching as we were so much worse last year. If we got snubbed from a bowl bid although they were eligible, that could have started a fire, but not to be.
6-6 (?) next year with a brutal OOC schedule. Kinda boring to think about but I don't see players I think will move the needle much next year, hate to say that about 20 year olds but it's true.

This sums it up very well. It should be sent to Frazier.

If the diehards feel this way, you can imagine how the more casual fans feel. The attendance will be even worse next year.

Does anyone know the record for most bowl losses for a coach without a win?

Agree with you that Carey is not going anywhere because NIU cannot afford to buy him out. Agree with you that no matter how much the MAC no longer helps NIU, there is no alternative at this particular time.
Disagree with you that "firing does nothing." Were it financially possible now, or when the time comes, parting ways with Carey brings the opportunity for fortunes to change. Hard to believe, but we could get someone worse; we could get someone who produces similar results; or we could get someone who is able to do better. The point is our football program is becoming stagnant. We contend for the MAC West, it's a coin flip if we're in the MACC, and we then lose a bowl game regardless of the opponent. That right now is our M.O.

I know the guy who owns Alley 64 through some friends. I was going to see if he'd be interested in making it a NIU gameday bar. Never did because I prefer attending the games....but now with the crap schedule, I may have to revisit the idea.

Change the narrative. "Team that was supposed to win 4-5 games went 8-5" and anything perceived as negative (not supporting Carey) is basically you don't support NIU.
It's out there.

Unfortunately I am 30 minutes from there. Love the St. Charles bars. Always a good mid way point for meeting up with Naperville friends.

Every one will remember the wins. No one will remember the losses.
I don't know about the rest of you, but I've never been a part of a team where win lose or draw was only the coaches fault.
