ESPN SC Recap
Anyone see the SC recap during the Cactus Bowl?

The hosts laughed at our two muffed fakes and then showed a few Duke TDs before highlighting the 'dominating' final score. Didnt show either of our TDs.

Yep, great job Rod I hope your recruits watched the bowl game and also saw that SC highlight summary. But it was all just for fun right?

You guys can judge for yourself.

ESPN SC Recap
I still cannot believe that a coach with any semblance of a brain would go for a fake punt from his own endzone. It defies reason.

4th and 18.
Maybe if it was 4th and 5 and that is only if it was set up perfectly.

RE: ESPN SC Recap
Bad snap...covered WR....bad pass.....5 yards short of 1st down, on 4th and 19, 1st Q, own endzone. Other than that, it was set up for success I guess.

Reason: We thought we could get pass int. on gunnner.

I can't even get mad. I actually just laughed. That's the worst part, when no matter how idioitic it is you expect it from Carey.

after that play:
Me: well, i'm going to go pick up dinner
my wife: aren't you going to watch the game? it's -2 out
me: being outside is going to be less torture than watching this
my wife: ok, well Jimmy Johns sounds good. if they lose, you can't walk the dog like you normally do after they lose, it's not fair to him. it's too cold.

ESPN SC Recap
NIU coach Rod Carey said they were hoping for a pass interference call on the fake punt. Duke coach David Cutcliffe didn't quite understand that idea. #QuickLaneBowl

I imagine Carey laughing to himself/thinking he was some kind of genius when he made the call.

Somehow, our games remind me of those slapstick comedy silent films.

You don’t even have to be a coach or understand Football that well to realize what he did was stupid..... The game was over on that play call. You can’t have a coach who panicks 7 minutes into the first quarter.03-banghead

OK—I may be really stupid—I really don’t care about the fake punt—obviously nobody would be expecting it and it’s a bowl game....do crazy stuff. BUT then we get the ball with 1:33 left in the half and we RUN THE BALL FIVE STRAIGHT TIMES AND THE CLOCK RUNS OUT with us at about our own 30. If you are going to try crazy crap, why not try to do conventional stuff and try to score at the end of the half, especially knowing Duke is getting the ball to start the third quarter.

NOT trying to score in the last 1.5 minutes is far more the signal of POOR GAME MANAGEMENT than faking a punt in a bowl game. (Let’s not forget, our first win at Purdue, we ran a fake in the final two minutes inside our own 20 to get a first down and win the game—the first win—not the blowout). Time and time again this staff ends a half trotting into the locker room instead of scoring. It’s a joke!

And, that comes on the heels of TWICE in the quarter getting a big play and knowing that it could happen.

Yes the fake punt was dumb—but for my money the end of the half was even worse.

if we are basing our play calling on hopes to draw penalties, there are bigger issues than I realized.

There is some logic as to the "hoping" for pass interference. Just not on 4th and 18, down 7-0 in 1st q from your own endzone.

There was a stretch where NIU threw about 6 medium long to long passes where there were 2 td, 2 pass int, 2 inc.

Yes, most were not good passes but anyone who watches NFL or college knows the outcomes: inc, int, complete, pass int.

You have to take chances when they had single coverage. Unfortunately we stopped going long when they started mixing up coverage instead of staying with 7-8 in the box. The TD's NIU got were some do to coaching, more do to therir dumb coaching and mostly luck which happens. But when they adjusted, NIU looked lost again. Shocking.

The second "fake" was not really a fake, but a bad snap that the holder tried to turn into something positive.

Espn didn't even have our record correct on the scoreboard graphic during the game. What a joke. That takes about ten seconds of research.

Yeah, I saw that. They had us at 7-5 for awhile before somebody must have called them.

The field goal was not a fake, it was a terrible snap it bounced to orne and wasn't because beebe was out. Sak has had a lot of trouble with snaps on fg's and xp's. He seems to be okay on punts.
