If we had that much we'd be undefeated every year in football, dancing every year in bball, and baseball would be hosting national seeds every year.

Even if you were going for hyperbole, you overshot it by a fair margin.

If we had that much we'd be undefeated every year in football, dancing every year in bball, and baseball would be hosting national seeds every year. USM has never been able to grow its fanbase because we are literally surrounded by nearly every SEC school: Alabama, LSU, Auburn, Ole Miss, MSU, and Tennessee. People ask why USM can't grow its fanbase...this is why. It's a cycle...any successful coach/administrator/AD/president will ALWAYS get poached by someone who can pay 2-3 times the amount.

LA Tech does well with less too.

I know some Southern Miss fans moan about being left behind by their former piers, but if the leadership at USM is content to try and survive by doing more with less, then their fans will probably always be moaning about other programs passing them by. As for being surrounded by several SEC programs, that is not a good excuse. Truth is, just about every G5 program has to contend with power conferences in their region. In Texas, we have to contend with 11 other FBS programs, 5 of which are in power conferences. Just within a hundred mile radius we have a Big12 and AAC program to contend with, but North Texas isn't just giving up. I really hope the leadership at Southern Miss figures out a plan to invest more into your athletics. Your fans deserve it.

Ok, a few points you fail to realize:

-Mississippi's population vs Texas' population
-Any decent person in a leadership role at USM gets poached by a school that can afford to pay 2-3 times what we can
-The SEC dominates the small populated Southern states that USM has to fight recruits for. If USM was located in Texas or North Carolina and having to battle with Baylor, Texas Tech, UNC, and NC STATE instead of being in Mississippi having to battle Alabama, LSU, Auburn, Ole Miss, and Mississippi State then life would be a LOT easier for USM athletics
-No other P5 conference has the clout and power that the SEC has ESPECIALLY in South.

People try to compare their school's recruiting battles with the B12 and ACC schools as the same as battling the SEC and I just laughed, like seriously you have no idea what it's like battling the SEC in Mississippi, Louisiana, and Alabama.

Undefeated in football every year, from another ~$25M?

Even if you just meant in conference play, that's still just completely hilarious.

That's 25 more millions were could use to go to things like buying players under the table like the SEC does.

Truth is with what Southern Miss is willing to spend on athletics they would be killed if they were in Texas. Every G5 program has issues to overcome.

If it were possible to spend your way to undefeated every year, whether within the rules or not, someone would have done it by now.

And Texas has what? A dozen FBS programs to Mississippi's three?

Every state has recruiting pilferers, regardless of how good of a talent producer that state is.

Far too many variables to say one side has it better in this regard.

Be honest, you know the power conferences don't recruit Mississippi like they do Texas. They don't recruit any other state like they do Texas.

Texas is the top state in America for college football talent. Mississippi came in ranked 11th. Believe me, the Texas G5 programs have to nationally recruit our local talent, because every power conference is flying in trying to lure our athletes out of state. USM is not in as tough of a recruiting situation as the Texas G5's. Here is a link to the 2017 rankings.

You are proving my point. Florida was 2nd, California 3rd, and Georgia 4th. According to the article Texas has a sizable advantage in 4 Star talent over Florida and California.

I'm aware they are 2nd, 3rd, and 4th, but it's not a matter of Texas existing on some other plane that is incomparable to any other state.

I'd submit that if anything Texas, Florida and California are all the tier above any other state that you are only putting Texas in.

Georgia, especially in the recent years has perhaps joined them, but being the smallest in population by a factor of 2-4x perhaps keeps my home state off that top tier.

I don't think you can draw a conclusion from only one year of recruiting.

SB Nation has a good article ranking all 50 states and D.C. by blue-chip recruits (4* & 5* high school recruits) from 2013-2017: https://www.sbnation.com/college-footbal...california

While Texas has produced more blue-chip recruits the past two years, Florida had done so the two years prior.

And here's the SB Nation article for 2018: https://www.sbnation.com/college-footbal...e-rankings

For 2018, Florida is significantly ahead of both California, who is now ranked second, and Texas, who has dropped to third.

And between 2013-2018, Florida has had the most blue-chip recruits, Texas is second, California is third, and Georgia is fourth.

And according to this article, at least at the time of publication, the ranking in NFL players by state of birth is: Florida(193), California(187), Texas(160), Georgia(97).

That would put Florida and Georgia in a virtual tie for per capita NFL players considering Florida's population is roughly double Georgia's, with Texas third and California fourth.

I know at one time Mississippi had the most pro players drafted PER CAPITA, although I'm sure some of the nerdies on here who prowl the internets instead of bars can prove or disprove it.

It's tougher than ever to recruit against the SEC, Big 12 or whomever...but some guys gotta understand the whole state of Florida has ONE SEC program (which gave rise to alternative programs such as FSU and Miami)...the whole states of Louisiana, Arkansas, Georgia, KY, South Carolina (and yes, Texas!) only have ONE SEC program, while a small and poor state like Mississippi HAS TWO SEC TEAT SLURPERS that literally suck the life outta the whole state! (and get their coffers replenished every year, whether they go 14-0 or 0-12!)

Hayell...Marshall has it tough enough battling West Virginia, just think if it was 2 SEC teams they were fightin' against? The city of Louisville, KY, has, I believe, 5 Fortune 500 companies----USM has Ward's, the Co-Cola plant where they don't make coke anymore, and Okatoma Canoe Rentals! Need I "say" more?03-lmfao

Again, we all have our own peculiar demons that damage our football brand, or we wouldn't be in SUNWACUSA....but some of us are particularly screwed as SH!T!04-cheers

RE: Assistant Coaching Salary Pool by School
Here's another article by SB Nation that provides some great visuals: https://www.sbnation.com/college-footbal...s-rankings

And to eaglebeaver, at least in regard to the above article about blue-chip recruits, Mississippi is ranked fourth per capita. 03-thumbsup

Florida, California and Georgia...

Never said we did, just that Southern Miss doesn't have it rougher because because they have to contend with the SEC in recruiting.

But if we are looking at comparing the difficulty of recruiting in Texas, Florida, and California, then you also need to look at the number of FBS programs in each state. Both California and Florida have 7 FBS programs in their states, while Texas has 12 FBS programs. So it is still a more difficult situation. If your team isn't down here seeing it first hand it is really hard to grasp.
