I don’t follow your logic about the bar being lowered, and I prefer to compete in a bigger pond. Hanging a CUSA banner in the Ted will significantly enhance the CAA banners that are currently displayed - and will demonstrate our growth as a program. And it will eventually happen - hopefully this year.
You should probably move on to supporting a P5 school. I would suggest a team like Kansas, Kentucky, UNC, Villa...that reload every year with blue chips. Because that will NEVER be ODU - and our current situation is as good as it gets. Seems you would be more satisfied if you’re currently dissatisfied. The bar has most certainly not been lowered.
Have to disagree on most of this. There were plenty of times in the CAA where Hofstra, Drexel, UNCW (ever heard of Brett Blizzard?) and even JMU provided very tough competition for the Monarchs. Also, by every measurement out there, the CAA is consistently rated better than CUSA. I believe that is in large part due to CUSA having 2 more awful teams, but it is the case none the less. Also, I do believe the top four of CUSA are all very good teams and would probably win the Colonial (in spite of WM beating us), but after that, the CAA is as good or better.
I agree that this year CUSA is A LOT better than the CAA. I think the best CAA team would be somewhere around 5th or 6th in this year's CUSA.
The comparison is to the CAA when we were in it. ODU, VCU, and GMU during the '04-'11 period were all superior to the top of CUSA this year. Those CAA years produced 2 Final 4 runs, at least 5 at-large bids, along with multiple NIT bids annually. Moreover, Drexel, Hofstra, Northeastern, and UNCW all had teams that would have been right up there with this year's WKU and MTSU teams. I don't this year's ODU team could finish in the top 4 in that CAA, much less still be competing for the regular season conference title. Granted, this is just an opinion, but there are results. Note, I am not complaining. CUSA is improving and I am thankful for that. We just still have a ways to go.
I think I agree with this.
Agreed. But it took a while for the CAA to get to that point as well. For most of it's history, the CAA has been a one-bid league.
CUSA is going in the right direction. I'm just not sure I have the patience to wait 3 more years for ODU to get a bid.

Let's see what happens. JJ has the talent to make it this year and had plenty of time to figure out how to take the next step. Approaching crunch time. With 2 key starters graduating this year and the other 3 graduating the following year, this might be the last realistic chance for awhile.

Not sure this is the last chance. Kithcart and Caver together has the potential to make us really tough to beat, along with BJ and Trey.

The potential of next years team is pretty high.

If the freshmen bigs are able to provide competent depth, at least in defense and rebounding, yes. If not, we could be in trouble.

I don't disagree with that comment Giles. I would add though that it seems to be the comment that many make on here every year regarding the next season. At some point being involved in the NCAA Tournament again has to be the end result.

Interesting stat regarding at-large teams and non-conference SOS.
ODU is currently 88 in RPI with a NC SOS of 248

again, the 19th place P5 school always get their autobid over the mids.

Is that SOS ranking for the entire season or the season up until now? We have some good games coming up that should boost it if its real time. Im surprised its that low.

That was our Non-Conference SOS. Our full season SOS is even worse right now.

We def squandered a good opportunity in Charleston when we lost to temple. Clemson and auburn both ranked. AU is #11

But that looks good on the eye test. The scores don’t reflect how lobsided the game was at halftime

Wow. I would have thought with Temple, Richmond, VCU, WM, Indiana St, Dayton it wouldn't be so bad. I know we also played UMES, NSU, JMU & Bowling Green, but you cant fill a schedule with great teams. They're aren't enough willing or available each year. I don't blame the schedule makers so much for this one. The first batch of teams is traditionally pretty decent. Temple is currently top 50, WM 84, VCU 98, Dayton 100, Towson 104. Thats 5 (almost, depending on the day) top 100 games. Problem is we went 2-3. But that doesn't affect the SOS, just the RPI. Man, if we could have just beaten WM and pulled off one of VCU/Temple we'd be in good shape for an at large right now.

I haven't really analyzed, but it seems like the teams we have played are better in KenPom rankings than RPI, but I could be wrong on that.
I'm so glad the committee is moving away from RPI though.

I really enjoyed watching vcu get out rebounded by a mostly 4 guard lineup. Rhode Island is a very good team.

Pretty sad we couldn't beat vcu even when they are this bad. I don't mean to rehash anything but it just feels bad man
