If they didn't say P7, the BIG 10 would be left off in basketball

It will be great if ESPN continues the moniker.

I thought we were always a power conference in basketball, considering UCONN won it like three years ago

I’ve heard the football terms spill over to basketball plenty of times. Good to see that changing.

The Power narrative we are pushing is smart.

No, it was more of a congratulations for the Big East getting into the power 7 in hoops.

How would being considered a “Power conference” in basketball by ESPN help our upcoming TV contract?

We have always been a power basketball conference. I think the difference is we go into negotiations knowing our league membership will be the same for at least 8 years. We outperformed all expectations along with decent ratings. We also have more hoops inventory with Wichita State in teams that nobody expected to be good. (example UCF, Houston, etc). Memphis and Uconn need to get back to old form.

UNLV won the title in 1990, that didn't make the Big West a "power" conference then. It made UNLV a Power team. If Wichita State had won the tournament last year, that wouldn't have made the MVC a Power conference either. Same principle.

But clearly, with the addition of WSU, ESPN is giving us the P7 treatment. Hopefully we earn it.

We have always been a power basketball conference.

No, we were putatively regarded as a power hoops conference upon creation of the conference, but then poor performance the last couple seasons cost us that status. The reason Aresco raided the MVC for WSU was because it was obvious that the AAC had been relegated perception-wise to non-power status, and so WSU was brought in to boost us back to that level.

So far, it has worked to reverse that perception, so we are now being regarded as power again.

And vice versa. “Mid-major” started out as a basketball term.

Show me where we were ever called a power conference when the league first
Began without Big East schools.

When the Big East split, the general national perception was that there were enough basketball assets in both the NBE and AAC for each to be a basketball power. If anything, at least around here, the expectation was that the AAC would out-perform the Big East.

That's just the way it was. But in time since, the AAC failed to live up to those expectations, so WSU was brought in as a hired gun to achieve that status. The failure of the original AAC hoops league has been averted, but at the cost of bringing in another mouth to the table.

How so? WSU paid us $2,500,000, doesn’t share in tv money and will increase attendance for members

We also thought we were losing the old Big East bottom-dwellers in Seton Hall, Providence, St Johns, and Depaul. Who would have thought that USF would out-suck that lot and bring down the rest of the AAC?
