Rice calls time out with the score 47-41. Game is starting to slip away.

Owls close the gap some with a mini-run. 49-53 with 8:51 to go.

Down 4, horrible TO. Inexcusable. Defense has also softened up a bit in the second, although Texas State is hitting some contested shots.

One of the worst 5* minute offensive stretches I've ever seen.
*7 minutes and still going
Last 11 possessions on O. Margin was 4 points when the stretch began:
-TO
-Missed 3
-Missed 3
-TO
-TO
-1/2 FT
-TO
-Missed 2
-TO
-1/2 FT
-TO before making 1 pass

After only 4 1H turnovers, Owls seemed determined to get back to their norm. In double digits in the 2H.

After realizing the Owls have mo inside game, TXST has extended their defense to where the Owls are struggling to get a shot off. Good adjustment by their coaches.

Shooters have been bad, but I’ve seen lots of pick and rolls where the roller has an angle and we don’t make the pass

I don't believe it's unreasonable to think that this team could finish 4-27. The game to circle is the January 25 home game against Florida International. That could be the last best chance for a win.
Thanks Mike Rhoades!!

The second half was tough to watch. The turnovers are brutal.

My biggest complaint is no sign of improvement/correcting mistakes and the continued expectation that the players will adjust to the system as opposed to adjusting the system TO the players. We obviously can't shoot 3's consistently, so why continue. Use more motion, run more picks, improve the passing (hell improve anything)

When HBU gets their big guy back, they would be about 20 points better than Rice.
Even without him, HBU is #280 in Pomeroy, while Rice is at #304. For Walt ---> that places Rice in the bottom quintile of Division I basketball.

While I seriously over-estimated our potential before the season, the comments from some here are shocking (and you have to wonder about their ulterior motives and agenda). We played hard last night and the potential of the young players isn't bad.
There was a decent similarity in the time frame between the Pera hire and the Bloomgren hire. Pera and his staff did a decent job in filling out the 2017-18 roster. It's certainly not going to be enough to make much of an impact in our win-loss total for this season. But it should only be a 1-year disaster if the players stick it out. And the fans don't give up on them.
Getting A.J. back will help. He was out there in pre-game warm-ups but wasn't participating in any drills so I don't know if that means he's close to returning or not. Getting the team to relax a bit would help too. Pera is certainly more intense than I expected on the sidelines. I hate to see his frustration level so high already.
My suggestion is to play the freshmen more (may as well give Hunter the PT as it will pay off in the future). I still am not giving up on Harrison either. He makes some mistakes for sure but the potential is still there and he is showing the proper aggression on the court too that you want to see. Lester had a nice 1st half but he also had some defensive deficiencies last night.

A.J. should be back for the start of conference. He's still under concussion protocol. He told me last night that the NCAA has granted him another season of eligibility next year. Jones was cleared from a concussion to play a couple of minutes last night so he may get more PT from now on. Agree on Hunter. He seems to have the possibility of being very good. He still makes some freshman mistakes, but I'd like to see more of him.

I don't think there is an agenda. Just a concern that grows every game with our inability to improve. We are playing awfully sloppy basketball, our fundamentals seem way off.
It doesn't matter how good the players we recruit for next year are if we keep turning over the ball and can't shoot FTs worth ****. This needs to be fixed ASAP, otherwise we in deep trouble.

This team has more potential than Braun's first team after the first mass exodus. If I recall, that team lost to St Thomas. Really think that we need to give these guys some time as you just can't have that kind of turnover and expect an instant turnaround. And Pera will be fine..
On another front, nice to see an article in the comicle and even better that we are now playing UTSA in our " American Athletic Conference" opener. Pathetic......
