Wellesley has football recruitment issues even more pronounced than a typical liberal arts or D3 school from what I can gather.

In reading this article, I have a few other takeaways that are directly applicable to Rice:
1) Even in D3, athletic performance and school spirit can have a major impact on school applications and alumni fundraising
2) Even in D3, schools are needing to spend multi-millions to have adequate facilities
3) Even U of Chicago brought football back

I think this article is not questioning the importance of athletics in a modern university, it is discussing the challenges of making sure recruiting athletes doesn't compromise the academic goals of the university, which something I think Rice does better than many.
