To be NCAA D1 its required to have 16 sports. NIU has 16 teams but as the NCAA views it as we have 17 because Indoor and Outdoor track are 2 different teams/seasons.

Cutting Mens soccer while still having Womens soccer would not make much of a difference in cost savings as we would still need the soccer facilities.

Baseball would be the logical team to cut. The cost savings of cutting NIU baseball team and halting maintenance on the field would be less than $500k of Athletics annual budget. If you want to demolish the field to expand the West side tailgating lot that would likely eat up a years worth of savings...but that lot increasing in capacity will likely increase the number of donors who would be able to park in that lot.

If Rauner is re-elected I would think that dropping baseball would be talked about within athletics as the next step to trim funding ONLY IF absolutely needed. I know that John Cheney (one of the Asst AD overseeing the details of the Master Plan) is a big fan of our team (his son is bat boy). So I know that he will do everything possible to not have it come to that.

I think a big part of this comes with getting a Summer League team to share the new stadium. I heard that there was interest before but that was before we sold beer and the deal didn't get anywhere in part because of that.

I would be incredibly bummed if they dropped baseball. I love watching games there.

As an avid follower of college baseball, I agree 100% and would hate to lose baseball for a second time.

As for the scoreboard, I'm with whoever said scrap the endzone seating and spend the money on a actual jumbo tron. Iowa state style and would fill the whole end zone making it feel more "bowl" style right away. Wouldn't mind seeing more of a permanent style fence along then endzone club till we get some actual funds for the reno.

Didn't we spend a ton on a jumbotron/scoreboard with orange bowl money?

That was me. $10 million on seats that won't be used vs. that amount or maybe less on something that would have a dramatic effect on the gameday experience. Anyone who was at the Toledo game at The Cell knows what I'm talking about. I watched most of that game on the screen it was so incredible. Seats should be added when there's an actual reason to do so, not to make the stadium look nicer. If that were ever a reqirement to get into a bigger conference I'm sure it could be done quickly. Smaller stadiums are the future in this studio football world. It's no accident that the Frisco Bowl was just played in a soccer stadium that holds about 20K. Fewer seats, better amenities is the goal.

+1

1981...Great point about the 2016 Toledo game at The Cell/Guaranteed Rate field. Like most everyone , had decent seats yet still found myself watching the JumboTron screen. The size and clarity was really unbelieveable.

"Fewer seats, better amenities"..I'm so glad to hear others think this way, seriously this could be the way to go.

RE: Updated & Changes to Athletic Master Plan Projects
Good article here on why NIU adding a nutrition center would be big. The P5 are way out ahead on this but If NIU wants to get closer to AAC or MWC level this would seem to be one area that needs an upgrade. It would also put NIU toward the top of the MAC as it seems most, if not all, MAC schools have not made an investment here yet. The nutrition center seems to be a big focus for 2018.

"It's not just Top 25 teams that value fueling. Guy like (Wyoming coach) Craig Bohl has his administration building a new football complex with a training table that will feed all Wyoming sports. The first thing Craig had me do when he arrived at Wyoming was put in a fueling station in the weight room."

Wyoming led the Mountain West Conference in nutrition spending at $900,000 last year, three times more than in 2014-15, and has hired two nutritionists.

Houston, of the American Athletic Conference, is spending just over $1 million, which ranks at the top of the Group of Five schools that responded to the AP survey. On the other hand, East Carolina, which plays in the same conference as Houston, spent $118,000 to provide four extra meals a week to athletes but had no training table, no fueling stations and no nutrition staff.

Of the seven Mid-American Conference schools that responded to the survey, none had a dedicated athlete training table and one had a part-time nutritionist. Ohio provided a snack station for the first time last year, allocating $35,000 for what it described as "dry food items and fruit."

This new focus on "fueling" and a focus on nutrition for athletes is so cool and I think it will pay big dividends.

When I played it was dorm food until you moved out, then it was hamburger helper in your apartment. There wasn't even money for Gatorade on my team.......

Screw the Nutrition Center. I say they put the team on the Huskie Stadium Hot Dog Diet. If a player needs to gain weight, feed him the hot dogs. If a player needs to lose weight, just tell him they ran out of hot dogs (no one will question this).

Question...did you have to move out or did you (and other players) do that on your own? Also were you on scholarship?

You had to live in the dorms your freshman year but could move out afterwards. Depending on how your scholarship was set up some found it financially advantageous (or more safe in the sense that they where not ready to "adult" and manage the realities of living on their own) to stay in the dorms for their SO year as well. But almost everyone ended up in off-campus housing by their junior year. As is probably today, it was sorta lame to live in the dorms as you got older.

I was on scholarship but not for room and board and that meant I had to pay for my own food, hence the hamburger helper comment. I can remember literally eating five hamburgers a sitting and who knows how many regular Cokes when on the dorm meal plan, and sometimes spending two hours at the KFC buffet in Sycamore on Sundays trying to replace calories in the most cost efficient manner after a long week of training.

When I moved out of the dorms I got a job at the Dill Pickle deli (remember that place?) for cheap lunches and worked at Stanleys so I could get a drink and a reduced price pizza from World Famous just about anytime.

I cannot stress how little the idea of "nutrition" was in place in the mid to late 90's. Mind you, I was never hungry. Just always needing to be more creative in finding the amount of food the body needed. Obviously this is the completely wrong way to replace calories after training compared to what we know now about the importance of nutrition.

I'm surprised they haven't opened this or pushed for donations on this as it is something that could get done quickly IMO.

Miss the Dill Pickle and the original Molly's, and for that matter the fights at 2am in front of the Jungle 03-wink

The Jungle was always good for a late night fight. Half the time it was the bouncers.

As much as I would love to reminisce all day about the Jungle's 50 cent drafts and lively Pike bouncers, I'm going to steer things back towards the original subject matter of this discussion...

DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY TANGIBLE INFO ON ANY PROGRESS WHATSOEVER REGARDING THE MASTER PLAN?

I was the the HOF in Canton Ohio last week, and drove through Akron's campus on the way back to the airport. Their football stadium looked awesome. We need something similar if we want to stay in the the premier G5 program discussion.

Posting here since it discusses specific facilities projects as well as potential naming rights for the Convo. The Nelson Club upgrade and nutrition center seem to be the immediate areas of focus.

We should start a pool and take bets on when the extension will be announced.
