We beat Kennesaw St by 9 tonight to go to 9-3. Dropped 10 points in RPI by beating a 200 plus RPI team

Had it within 4 and the ball with 2 minutes left, but couldn't convert. Shockers win 89-80. Still, lots of progress tonight.

That was the most fun I've had watching stAte basketball since the Nelson Catalina era. Wish we would see that kind of effort every game.

We’ve looked bad the past two games. The cross country back-to-back trips are starting to have a negative effect

This basketball team is no different than the past regime under Byington.

RE: Basketball RPIs — 12/17
Cajuns beat a good Southeastern Louisiana team 82-74. I was very impressed with the players SE puts on the court. They are very good shooters, super quick, and play hard. They don't have a lot of height which was the Cajuns big advantage and the deciding factor in the game last night.

RPI does not matter right now. The basic formula is 25% of your winning percentage, 50% your opponents and 25% of your opponents opponents.

Going down doesn’t matter in December. Beating DI teams is about all that matters right now. That will be 75% of our RPI, since the conference will average .500.

Once conference play starts, and the conferences start playing each other almost exclusively, the win totals from now start upping the RPI for everyone. Right now, conferences ahead of the SBC are ahead because they’ve lost a lot of games to teams with high RPI. Once they start play, those losses will account for 50% of their RPI total.

Your win against Kennesaw May have dropped you now, but it will raise everyone later.

The only way you fix teams unwilling to play OOC on the road is what baseball does, make home wins count in the RPI 60% less than road wins (1.3 versus .7). Then at least you'll have a chance of somewhat balancing the scheduling.

Sort of. The problem is the rest of the league's RPI's are so low that Southern's RPI is certain to go down the rest of the season unless they literally win out.

Again, not necessarily. I team that is 10-0, all against sub-200 RPI teams, will benefit the conference more than a 3-7 team that is at 100 right now. Arkansas state will hurt Southern’s RPI. Louisiana will help, solely because they have a good winning percentage against DI comp.

Exactly why RPI is too much of a flawed system to have the power it does. You should never beat a team, no matter how bad, and have your rating go down (ranking can vary because of what those above and below you might have done, but RPI math is...well, kinda stupid). All it has on its side are history and the fact that anyone can understand it.

Of course, I don't know that more legit ranking systems would favor mid-majors (yep, I said it) any more, since at least RPI can theoretically be gamed because it's so straightforward. Can't say I've seen too many examples of that occurring, though, so maybe it's harder than I think to schedule a DI team's OOC schedule. I guess the bottom line is just win the games in front of you.

It looks like only one Sun Belt team will be in the NCAA Tourney ... no surprise.

This was always going to be a 1 bid league. Not sure what you are complaining about.

Be glad that NMSU is not a basketball affiliate of the Sun Belt. They beat #6 undefeated Miami Fl. 63-54 tonight.

I'm not really sure what the difference would be honestly. You guys are going to destroy the WAC...again. You would win the Sun Belt as well. Only difference here is maybe a UTA or Georgia State could beat you once in a perfect scenario

Otherwise, enjoy the NCAA bid guys.

Shouldn’t have been last year. Had we taken care of DGCU and GeobSt taken care of their SWAC opponent, there’d be a great chance again.

But at this junction, it looks unlikely.

well they could be if the eastern schools werent against them being all in. probably right about 1 bid. uta has shown that they often dont shoot well when it counts otherwise they might be 13-0. no more games on the schedule for uta or gastate to win to move up in RPI.
