That's my concern. It's also a huge red flag that too many people are saying that Scott didn't interview multiple candidates. Why wouldn't you talk to the OC at JMU? North Dakota State? Jacksonville State? Billy Taylor? Jamey Chadwell? At least see what was out there.

JMU's OC is Donnie Kirkpatrick, who you may remember was a complete dumpster fire at Chattanooga back in the day. Hard pass.

NDSU's staff is almost entirely from the Midwest and would struggle to recruit competitively in a region they barely know anything about. Their OC, Courtney Messingham, is childhood friends with Chris Klieman, their head coach. They've wanted to coach together for years, he won't throw that away for us.

Jacksonville State doesn't have an OC. Grass calls his own plays and leaves the defense to a brain trust.

Sanders is infinitely more qualified to run this program than Chadwell or Taylor or, for that matter, any of the names above (except Klieman, who we couldn't afford if he was interested). They easily COULD have hired Billy Taylor, like many on this board were hoping they would, but they, in your words, looked to see what was out there. They got an OC who has recruited and coached athletes at multiple P5 programs and knows ETSU's recruiting footprint as well as anyone we could have hoped to hire. This is what swinging for the fences looks like at ETSU. We would be hard-pressed to do better than Sanders.

Except Jamey has proven experience at the FCS level as a head coach. He won at a place who's stadium wasn't quite as nice as Longhorn Stadium in Johnson County.

Jamey is holding out for the Coastal Carolina job. I don't know if you know that or not.

What a hire.

Maybe time to rethink? This and Marcus leaving for Baylor are all over the national news today. Regardless what anyone thinks about what he's alleged to have done, this is not good press for the school and could hurt recruiting, before he's even coached a game.

Personally, I haven't renewed my season tickets yet, and I'm going to at least wait a little longer to see what the story is and how the school responds. If he struck a kid, even with a helmet, that is inexcusable and not compatible with what ETSU should be about... I know, all the internet tough guys will bend over backwards trying to justify this, because FOOTBAW!, but if a 50-something grown man assaulted your teenage kid, would that be OK? If that's what Sanders did, he needs to be gone, yesterday. Even if he's cleared - and I do hope this was just a misunderstanding - something like this definitely will be an uphill battle to come back from, if for no other reason than the likelihood that at least some recruits' parents aren't going to forget it, and are going to think twice about entrusting their kids to his care.

Majors Worried about Lobos' Hot Offense

Knoxville, Tenn. (UPI) -- New Mexico's "run-and-shoot" offense ran up and down the field for 470 yards a game last year, so Tennessee coach Johnny Majors is understandably concerned about stopping the Lobos.

"They run and shoot. It's a wide-open, explosive, big-play offense," Majors said at this weekly press conference Tuesday.

Tennessee and New Mexico play Saturday night in the season-opener for both teams. The game originally was scheduled for Albuquerque, but was moved to Knoxville because the University of New Mexico failed to follow through with plans to expand it's stadium.

New Mexico scored plenty of points last year, but its problem was a defense that allowed 37.7 points a game, resulting in a 3-8 season. Lobos Coach Joe Lee Dunn tried to patch up the defense by adding several junior college transfers.

Majors, who starts, his 10th season as head coach of the Volunteers, said he plans to also play Sanders some.

Tennessee will face New Mexico without two key players -- Carlos Reviez, one of the best kickers in the nation, and first-team linebacker Kelly Ziegler. They were suspended for one game by the NCAA for giving complimentary game tickets to unauthorized people last season.

Junior walk-on Phil Reich will kick and sophomore Keith DeLong will replace Ziegler at linebacker. Majors said Reviez and Ziegler will be missed.

"Reviez has outstanding ability and reliability Ziegler is a hard-nosed, tough football player," Majors said.

Tennessee heads into the 1986 season with a veteran defense and an offense with unproven talent at quarterback and receiver.

Majors chose Jeff Francis, a sophomore from Mt. Prospect, Ill., as his starting quarterback over another sophomore, Randy Sanders of Morristown. The coach said he was "confident" Francis can get the job done.

"Somebody asked me yesterday if I felt comfortable with the quarterback situation. Well, I try to make a practice of not bein[sic] comfortable since I've been coaching. I don't want to get that feeling. I feel confident," Majors said.

--- Johnson City Star, September 3, 1986

[UT finished the 1986 season 7-5, beating Minnesota in the Liberty Bowl game. They beat the Lobos 35-21, then lost 5 out of 6, before winning their last 5.]

FYI........here is a page from the 1985 UT football guide:

Sanders's write-up prior to the 1985 season

[Sanders was a 4-year member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll. In 1986 he was 16/28 passing, with one TD and one INT. That 1986 season constituted his most action for the Orange.]
