Majors Worried about Lobos' Hot Offense
Knoxville, Tenn. (UPI) -- New Mexico's "run-and-shoot" offense ran up and down the field for 470 yards a game last year, so Tennessee coach Johnny Majors is understandably concerned about stopping the Lobos.
"They run and shoot. It's a wide-open, explosive, big-play offense," Majors said at this weekly press conference Tuesday.
Tennessee and New Mexico play Saturday night in the season-opener for both teams. The game originally was scheduled for Albuquerque, but was moved to Knoxville because the University of New Mexico failed to follow through with plans to expand it's stadium.
New Mexico scored plenty of points last year, but its problem was a defense that allowed 37.7 points a game, resulting in a 3-8 season. Lobos Coach Joe Lee Dunn tried to patch up the defense by adding several junior college transfers.
Majors, who starts, his 10th season as head coach of the Volunteers, said he plans to also play Sanders some.
Tennessee will face New Mexico without two key players -- Carlos Reviez, one of the best kickers in the nation, and first-team linebacker Kelly Ziegler. They were suspended for one game by the NCAA for giving complimentary game tickets to unauthorized people last season.
Junior walk-on Phil Reich will kick and sophomore Keith DeLong will replace Ziegler at linebacker. Majors said Reviez and Ziegler will be missed.
"Reviez has outstanding ability and reliability Ziegler is a hard-nosed, tough football player," Majors said.
Tennessee heads into the 1986 season with a veteran defense and an offense with unproven talent at quarterback and receiver.
Majors chose Jeff Francis, a sophomore from Mt. Prospect, Ill., as his starting quarterback over another sophomore, Randy Sanders of Morristown. The coach said he was "confident" Francis can get the job done.
"Somebody asked me yesterday if I felt comfortable with the quarterback situation. Well, I try to make a practice of not bein[sic] comfortable since I've been coaching. I don't want to get that feeling. I feel confident," Majors said.
