Uhm, your brand was being built when you were beating P5 schools. You think OOO vs. the likes of of Presbyterian, MTSU, UNLV and Idaho gets you to "big bowl?" You think you get exposure, tv with teams like that? Please. You want attention, you want recognition in NP5 you have to go out and beat them.

Oh, and BTW, there is this green thing called money that athletic programs need. Like a few 100k+ for going to play on the road. I mean the Sunbelt has even figured that out.

Who gives a **** about winning the worst conference in college football.

Every team in the MAC. Most of those teams fans.

Feels like a waste if we have a crap ooc record

Exactly, and nobody here could tell me who played in the sun belt or conference USA championship last year because nobody cares, but they will remember Troy beating LSU and of course NIU beating Nebraska.

Exactly.

Two 3rds of all FBS football teams, who did worse than 8-5.

We'll be stuck in the MAC with 8-5

And where was NIU supposed to be going?

And I love the assumption that every "cupcake" you schedule is win. Like WIU? If NIU scheduled CFU after they didn't win a game and lost to them this year would that be bad scheduling?. And when NIU scheduled Nebraska I am sure they weren't considered a cupcake.

No casual fan will remember we lost to CMU but will remember we beat Nebraska.
NIU needs as many casual fans as we can get.

BYU was baaad this year.
FSU 6-6 this year and undergoing a coaching change. Still a lot of talent, but who knows.
@Iowa is the really tough one, even if they have no offense.
3-1 wouldn't surprise me, and would probably make Huskies leaders for Access Bowl going into conference.

While you claim "3-1 wouldn't surprise me," what are you really expecting?
Because pre-season magazines won't be afraid to predict the Huskies going 0-4, 1-3 at best.

+100 give me OOC victories or bowl wins vs P5 anyday over a MACC.

Who gives a **** about winning the worst conference in college football. We need more. It was working until the last few years. Can't bite off more than we can chew

So you don’t care about winning the MAC and don’t care about challenging ourselves OOC.

May as well cancel the program. No ambition.

How was basketball equivalent Butler built? The biggest conference jump (Horizon to Big East) in college sports this century?

Through OOC scheduling. Did you know the second year Butler played in the National Title game - they started 5-5 in the Horizon? No one remembers that. Everyone remembers that Butler beat 4 P5’s in Nov/Dec before doing it all over again in March.

I get the ambition but we need to win regularly. It should get to the point where it isn't shocking news. We should have twice as many boneyard victories as we do. Teams like Boise, tcu and several American teams are expected to win. No team from the MAC is thought of in that way. Nebraska was a great win for the brand. However we should have beat BC and SDSU as well. We didn't look good last year losing to sdsu and USF and should have beat Wyoming. I want us to make the jump as bad or more than most but we have to back it up when we have the chance. Beating Duke will be a good start going into next years schedule.

I agree with having ambitions and improving the OCC - BUT GRADUALLY !!!

Next year is a GIANT leap of faith in that regard.

Careful what you pray for. Battered and beaten is not an ideal preparation for MAC games -and especially when any NIU difference makers and depth is limited.

Herein lies the disconnect. There's people who view the current team as it is. And those who view it as how they wish it were. Let's get a starting QB before we start knocking off top P5 teams.

MACC's are harder to come by. NIU has more P5 wins than conference championships. The move to bigger wins and noteriety comes AFTER you win your conference. Do you really think NIU gets respect by beating a P5 but not wining the MAC? "So they beat Iowa. They couldn't even win the freaking MAC.."

NIU had to beat two ranked teams in order to get any recognition in 2003. That’s life as a G5. UCF went undefeated and didn’t even crack the top 10. Scheduling matters.

You're comparing apples to oranges bro. In bball even top seeds commonly lose 4-5 games. You can't lose like that in football.

Let's schedule carefully, win, and maybe get invited to a better conference like the AAC.

Our record has nothing to do with getting into another conference. Well, certainly not an undefeated one. Beating nationally recognized opponents FAR outweighs going undefeated against terrible teams. Also, we would need a new stadium and a bunch of money.

You just made my point! UCF made it to an access bowl...oh btw their marketing team seems to figure out how to brand UCF instead of central Florida.

Record is how you get ranked and get more recognition. Again I'm not saying all cupcakes but an easier ooc is good for us until we take the next step as a program. Carey isn't good enough to take on a difficult ooc. Didn't someone post we only beat teams with losing records?
