Congratulation to TU. Must be nice to support a program that is on top and wants to stay there. The price of playing poker just went up.

Wish that the Minnesota job didn't open up last year and Fleck stayed at WMU, those two would've been two great coaching centerpieces for the MAC.

Yep. Ten cent ante is gone.

The floor on salaries are I guess 100K higher today.

The upside, I hope, is that at 1M+, a coach will say I can live comfortably (understatement of the year) in Toledo on that salary and no reason to go chasing more dollars.

It would be nice to have a MAC coach stay in place for say 10 years.

About 13 years for Solich.

Unfortunately we know all too well in the MAC that won't happen. Solich and Novak were too old to be poached. Candle will stay around until a mid-level P5 team offers him $2.5-3 million to be their coach.

At the end of the day nothing can keep a coach in the MAC, we just saw Florida freakin State lose their coach so a big raise won't make a difference. That being said, something like this or Fleck's prospective extension last year can make it difficult for low P5s to poach them, or if they are poached we get a huge buyout in our pocket. Candle has been at Toledo since 2009 so clearly he has some feelings for the Rockets, though his ambitions almost certainly extend higher.

What I'm noticing is that MAC salaries are getting to the point where the MAC can simply buy coaches from FCS, quality P5 assistants or P5 retreads.

Its never going to be enough prevent coaches from leaving. SMU paid Chad Morris over 3 million and he was gone in a flash to Arkansas.

But at least we don't have to worry about losing coaches to San Diego St or position coaches to HS anymore. At least for the better MAC programs.

Kent State needs to make decision here about what level they want to play at. The Horizon League still has openings.

Really, this raise was likely not to retain him. Actually, it is quite the opposite. UT probably expects Candle to leave for greener pastures very soon. By giving him that salary bump, there will be a corresponding increase in his buyout. So when he leaves, they will have obtained a return on the salary increase because the buyout UT receives will be more than the extra money they have paid him up to that point.

Candle's buyout is only $450,000. That won't keep any P5 school from hiring him.

His buyout went from $300k to $450k. That's chump change to P5 schools.

I would think it has several positives for both UT and the coach.

1). The coach see his salary in the out years increase which would help him with his next contract (regardless of where it is).

2). UT stands to pick up extra buyout $.

Never mind then, I was operating with the assumption that anyone would have to buy out his entire contract.

I wish they woulda made it like $1M if he leaves in 2017, then like $100-200k less as each year passes.

$450,000?!?! Lester's buyout is $1 million less 200k per year. $450k is less than what Martin would owe Miami if he were to leave on his own.

Buy-outs should be AT LEAST one year's salary ($1.2MM in this instance) to pay for the next coaches transition year salary. No coach should ever argue that. Want a lower buy-out? than except a lower salary. your choice.

More like chump change to the individual football booster who will write the check on behalf of the P5 school.

Isnt the buyout the entire left over contract plus the buyout money. Essentially, 450k is the key to the contract then the buyer pays up thru the year.... Right?

Depends on the contract. In JC's contract, he (or the new school) would 'only' have to pay $450k.
