Must you do this on every thread?

Agree with Antarius on this. OO - drawing comparisons between football (where there are 85 scholarships and literally every team in the country experiences some number of injuries) with women's basketball (where there are only 13 scholarships and some teams will make it through the season almost completely unscathed by injuries) gets an "F" as a comparison. If the Rice women were losing games by 60 points despite having 8 healthy scholarship players ... then the injuries would not be an excuse for that kind of performance.

Just giving back what I have been told. I was told in no uncertain terms that injuries were no excuse, and thought that applied to all athletics. This is the first that I have heard that it only applies to football. I will take note of that.

Good grief, Buddy-- stop digging a hole. The comparison between football injuries (85 scholarship athletes and 24 starters) and basketball (13 scholarships and 5 starters) is beyond ridiculous. Apply some simple common sense.

Really, Walt. I was done, but now I must reply.

85/24 = 3.54
13/5 = 2.6

I am not sure where between 2.6 and 3.54 injuries become insignificant. Generally, to me, it depends more on who gets hurt and what position they play. A starting DT is hard to replace, as is a starting basketball center or a starting pitcher. An all conference player is hard to replace in any sport. We will hear stuff all season long, in every sport, about how much better we would have been if only XYZ had not been hurt much of the season. We have heard it from you, Walt, about baseball. I predict we will hear it again in every sport, every season.

Fact is, injuries do matter. They cannot be an excuse for losing, because it is the coach's job to overcome adversity. But they matter.

I will retire the "Injuries are no excuse" until somebody makes an excuse with them in football season.

Why are you focusing on scholarships as opposed to number of starters? An injury to a single key starter in basketball greatly impacts a team's performance. You can-- and most teams do-- absorb several key injuries to starters in football (save the star QB) and still perform at a very high level. Not only do single players have less of an overall impact in football, but the available bench of backup players is much deeper than in basketball. Finally, injuries are very much an expected part of the game in football; much moreso than in basketball or baseball for that matter. There's a reason why a football team has 85 scholarships and are 3+-deep at most positions.

Oh okay great. That is a big difference. Both sisters are outstanding players and students. How did Olivia get a concussion. falling down, banging heads, etc.? I thought I also saw her wearing a boot?

They offered assistance at the time of the injury and they were standing by most of the second half and after the game. (They didn't go on the court at the time of the injury). I believe they offered to transport the player to Methodist for evaluation of the injury but the ULM trainers declined although discussions were continuing as I left the game.

Second, Olivia was not at the game. She suffered a concussion in practice and is still having lingering effects such as headaches and sensitivity to light/sound. I think she will be back at some point. I wouldn't begin to estimate the time to return.

We currently have 8 active players. With Olivia it would be 9.

I thought I saw Olivia in a boot during the initial warmups, but later I decided I had confused her with freshman Temi Alao. I don’t think that Olivia was out at all during the game.
