The deal is done: Disney purchases 21st Century Fox
New York Times reports on the acquisition.

ESPN will apparently control 22 regional broadcast networks.

RE: The deal is done: Disney purchases 21st Century Fox
If the House of Mouse owns the media rights to nearly every power school, would they consider "recommending" schools to shift around and create an 8-team playoff? Traditional and/or regionalized conferences + ND, no guaranteed playoff spots. I understand that some of these schools wouldn't be happy to move, but perhaps they could be convin$ed.

PAC: Washington, Washington St, Oregon, Oregon St, California, Stanford, USC, UCLA
SWC: Arizona, Arizona St, Utah, Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, TCU, Baylor, Arkansas
Big 8: Colorado, Kansas, Kansas St, Oklahoma, Oklahoma St, Missouri, Nebraska, Iowa St
SEC: LSU, Mississippi, Mississippi St, Alabama, Auburn, Kentucky, Tennessee, Vanderbilt, Georgia, Florida
B1G: Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Northwestern, Indiana, Purdue, Michigan, Michigan St, Ohio St
ACC: Florida St, Georgia Tech, South Carolina, Clemson, North Carolina, North Carolina St, Duke, Wake Forest, Virginia, Maryland
East: Miami, Louisville, Virginia Tech, West Virginia, Pittsburgh, Penn St, Rutgers, Syracuse, Boston College
Independent: Notre Dame

I've said it on here before, but South Carolina will never, ever go back to the ACC under any circumstances. If we got kicked out of the SEC we would go to whatever version of the Big 12 remained, or go Independent/American before doing that.

Are you $ure?

You aren't going to see the Big 10 or SEC shrink. They both enjoy the power they wield. You could see some minor rearrangement or further additions, but you will not see them shrink.

So yeah, I'm damned sure that South Carolina is not going to be moving anywhere.

Entertaining speculative notions is fun in the absence of real news. But the news today consolidated even more power over college sports in ESPN's hands and the Mouse isn't going to destroy its relationships with the conferences by curtailing them and trying to split up the most powerful. Quite the contrary will occur. They will augment the strongest, and reduce overhead in the weakest. That's the history of product development in American business.

Texas may well be placated now and the Big 12's survival is a rosier outlook because of today's deal. If shifts take place they will be with the least profitable and with the launch of the ACCN upcoming that could well be the PAC.

Perhaps the most profitable model moving forward would be for ESPN, and FOX, in the wake of their deal to move product they cannot fully monetize in the PAC into a conference they can fully monetize.

And reducing the present 65 into 3 conferences of 20 might well be the eventual outcome. If it is we could see two predominant G conferences formed with the best of the rest and an upper tier limited to about 92 to 100 schools. That's the more likely outcome.

They aren't expanding the playoffs because it interferes with the academic calendar, the sports overlap of changing seasons, and it increases the likelihood of injuries. So there is not going to be a return to 10 school conferences, a larger inclusion of low market penetration schools, or an expansion of the playoffs.

Bank on it!

South Carolina tried to re-join the ACC twice and we know for a fact that Eric Hyman was holding talks with Swofford about that possibility too.

Same goes for Missouri. They would disband the program first.
