I don't see the benefit at all.

Amy's resume is stellar. She has leadership experience, sound moral judgment, and a track record or success. She also bakes the best brownies and oatmeal raisin cookies.

To answer your question, I think it is a hedge against the fear of the inevitable split of D-1a (FBS) into 2 divisions, and the thought that the service academies would be saved from relegation, so too would be their conference (us).
