I think all realistic-thinking Dukes fans certainly understand and expect Houston will leave if a blue blood type opportunity came along. What folks should start doing though is giving more credence to Houston's words instead of blowing them off as typical coach-speak when he says he loves his situation at JMU for his family and himself. Having faced the same scenario multiple times and turned them down, I have a lot of respect for a father who doesn't want to uproot his children every few years if he can avoid it.

When he leaves, it will be a smart decision and certainly not high-tailing it to the majority of mediocre uninteresting G5 programs - especially in the Island of Misfit Toys Conference.

no mention of the money at jmusports.com - but hell of a quote...

"James Madison is a special place. Amanda, our boys and I want to be here and consider this home," Houston said. "JMU approached me in in the second half of the regular season to discuss an extended contract. During negotiations, there was significant interest from multiple FBS programs. Throughout the process, JMU was proactive in wanting to make a long-term commitment while ensuring that our staff could remain intact. I've turned down opportunities at the FBS level, and I did it because I believe in James Madison University. I believe in the leadership of Jeff Bourne, Senior Vice President Charlie King and President Jonathan Alger. I believe in their vision for our university and our athletics programs. I also believe in our student-athletes, everyone in athletics who supports us and the passionate fan base that cheers for us. I am committed to ensuring that the JMU football program is one that is a reflection of our outstanding institution. I'm committed to staying here because JMU is different."

Amen

This. Beyond the contract, you don’t make the type of statement HCMH just did if you plan to leave in the foreseeable future. He basically wrote an essay about why he wants to stay, and didn’t have to do that. I think he’s pretty set here for at least a few more years.

This board has so much negativity at times its almost poisonous. We have folks who could take sweet lemonade and turn it into rotten lemons on here.

Great to hear about the contract extension. Great job by our admin. Can't wait to see the early signed class we're about to get.

To be fair, I don't know that I've ever been on a message board or forum that wasn't filled with negativity.

It feels like the chances of him seeing at least one recruiting class all the way through to graduation has gone up significantly.

Hi, I’m new here, JMU 2018. We are going to look back at his tenure years down the road and think how lucky we are. This is a HELL of a football coach and an even better family man. He should never have to pay for anything again in Harrisonburg.

Side note: it will be very interesting when the contract details are released because as I recall, his first contract at JMU had no mentions of a pay increase if we were to move to FBS during his tenure (which was unique as I believe Withers had one).

Withers' contract did have one as did Matt Brady's. I also don't remember seeing what it would cost him should he bail. Everett Withers' contract spelled it out.

whew..and i'm sure i'm missing a few things

Adding one more from Breeze article, certainly MH related too:
- JMU was also awarded in 2016-17 by the FCS Athletics Directors Association for posting the largest single-year increase in Academic Progress Rate in the country.

^^ thats huge.. and parents love to see that

I guess we will find out more when the DNR digs into the details.
This will either be great news or pretty good news. It all depends on how the contract is structured.

The announcement leaves me wanting for more information.
Is there an annual increase?
How much is the buyout?
Does he have a FBS escalator?
How much money is guaranteed?
How much money is performance based?

All of these things may help us determine what type of FBS offer will be enough for him to seek greener pastures.

I think Houston is a smart guy more so than anything. As schools called (I think GaSouthern was one of them) he carried that the the table at JMU. I bet he worked a considerable raise with benefits. It’s the leverage that good coaches have!

Agreed , I think the profession of college football coaching has jaded a few. If a top level FBS schools wants him they will get him.........

But good for the program and recruiting to have him on paper for 10 years.

And for the first time, id bet we have a coach that makes a base that is more than the president's...if not immediately, within a few years

That kind of change wouldnt happen without a shift by Alger - and if so I will give him props for the pivot (and buy him a suit 03-wink

He has suits he just needs a good tailor. :D

This is great news for JMU! I am only a little disappointed in the timing in that it takes away from SDSU focus by the players even if only for a minute.
