It does not seem like that long ago but still painful.

I was in the dorm - Richardson - that evening. Studying for finals, or just wrapped and getting ready to go home. First semester in college - just like Charles.

He was really a special man. Although I never met him his authenticity made it easy to get behind that team. My wife and I became season ticket holders in Rex Dockery's 1st year and have been hooked ever since. RIP

You hit the nail on the head. I was lucky enough to meet him at a couple of different functions and sat across from him at a fish fry one time. He was authentic and as warm a person as there is. I remember walking away feeling like we had us a fine coach and a fine man to lead the team on and off the field.

Rex was the first coach we had that could get the local blue chip recruit to stay home instead of going to one of the local sec schools.

Why did Ray Brown leave after one season at TE and transfer to Arky St? Went on to play 20 seasons in the NFL as an o-lineman.

Rex Dockery was and inspirational leader. He had great character. He knew how to coach, and he knew how to build a team. There is a word for that.

Terrible tragedy. Remember it well and with great sadness. I was a senior at Memphis State at the time.
